Supplement Use During Pregnancy
by Dr. Judith Smith
In the United States there is a nationwide campaign to promote health and disease prevention called "Healthy People 2010" and the health of mothers and their infants is a priority to be addressed in this campaign.
During pregnancy, the developing baby gets "dibs" on all the nutrients it requires so it becomes critically important the mom-to-be is getting all the nutritional requirements to support fetal development and growth as well as her own body's requirements to support maternal tissues (i.e. placenta and breast), metabolism and reproduction changes.
In the National Diet and Nutrition Survey that was reported in 2005, it found over 80% of women failed to achieve even the Reference Nutrient Intake (which has replaced the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)) of folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, or antioxidants from their daily diet. Hence, the use of supplements is highly recommended during pregnancy to meet all the nutritional requirements for mom and baby!
There are many vitamins and minerals that are important to supplement during pregnancy including: folic acid, B vitamins, vitamin A, magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc.
In a healthy diet vitamins and minerals work synergistically so they mimic the ideal healthy diet, it is recommended to use supplement with a balanced combination of vitamins and minerals and omega-3 fatty acids rather than trying to just take a few separate ones.
Similar to the "foundation" we discussed last month, implementing or continuing to take "The Core Three" including CorePlex with iron; OmegaPlex; and Calcium Plus during pregnancy is a good place to start. CorePlex with iron with provide a well-balanced vitamin/mineral supplement during pregnancy and continue with three tablets once daily, or as recommended by your physician.
OmegaPlex is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids that has optimal bioavailability (absorption). During pregnancy the requirement for omega-3 fatty acids dramatically increase, especially during the third trimester. Omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in the development of fetal brain, eyes, and cognitive ability. Helland and colleagues conducted long term study that found that women that had omega-3 supplementation during pregnancy had children improved intelligence which was evident as early as age four years old! Initially pregnant mom's can start with two OmegaPlex capsules twice daily but by third trimester increasing to two OmegaPlex ... continue reading

TABATA TRAINING:
Can 4 Minutes Of Exercise Be Enough For Fat Burning? by Jenny Donnelly
The basis of Tabata Training is 4 minutes of intense interval training/circuit training. What you are doing is taking an exercise (let's use sprinting in place as an example) and performing it at your maximum intensity for 20 seconds, then resting for 10 seconds. You then repeat this for a total of 8 rounds:
Sprint in place as hard as you can for 20 seconds
Walk in place for 10 seconds
Repeat 7 more times for a total of 8 sets
This equals a total of 4 minutes
Tabata Training can be done with a number of different exercises. The idea is to use an exercise that gets the whole body involved or at least the major muscle groups.Tabata Training can be done with barbells, dumbells, kettlebells or just bodyweight exercises.
Tabata Training was developed by Izumi Tabata at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. They did a study on comparing the effects of moderate intensity endurance (aerobics) and high endurance intermittent training (tabata training intervals) on VO2 max and anerobic capacity.
The results of the study: the moderate intensity group training program produced a significant increase in VO2 max of about 10%, but had no effect on anaerobic capacity. The high intensity group improved their VO2 max by about 14% while anaerobic capacity improved by 28%. The study was done over a six week period. Both groups working out 5 days per week. Interval training, like TABATA has been a method we rely on to help burn body fat quickly.
*Getting Started:
Choose an exercise that you can do that involves large muscle groups. Use a timer on your phone (you can download a TABATA app) and do this exercise at a high intensity (your personal maximum intensity) for 20 seconds. Then, rest for the next 10 seconds. Perform a total of 8 rounds.
Variety:
Choose 4 different exercises that, when combined, involve both upper and lower body and large muscle groups. Perform these 4 exercises in 20 second work/10 second rest intervals.... for a total of 4 rounds. Repeat one more time through. This will equate to your 4 minute TABATA routine.
Example:
20 seconds ~ Rapid Squats / 10 seconds ~ Rest
20 seconds ~ Tricep Push Ups / 10 seconds ~ Rest
20 seconds ~ Alternating Lunge Jumps / 10 seconds ~ Rest
20 seconds ~ Jab Punches / 10 seconds ~ Rest
REPEAT
(Google these exercises for further explanation of the moves)
Challenge:
Do a 4 minute round of TABATA then add another round of TABATA with a short 1-2 minute rest between rounds. Add more TABATA rounds using different exercises. Go to your "personal edge" - that being the place where you feel challenged, but not experiencing sharp pain or complete breathlessness. If you are able to carry on a full conversation, you are probably not working at your "edge."
*Please consult your physician before starting an exercise regimen.

Embrace vs. Escape the Growth Process
Christine Baker, Diamond Distributor
We are surrounded by so many beautiful results of a PROCESS. When we eat the most delicious fruit, there was a process to it becoming ripe! In fact, if picked premature, its definately not as sweet! Us ladies admire the bulbs that bud forth in spring, but those started as a seed, and through the process of time and cultivation, they grew. (In fact, they even multiply!) Why is it that when things tend to get just a little difficult, or when we are asked to do something that might be slightly uncomfortable, humans have a natural tendency to "pack up the tent" and escape the growth process?
My husband and I have a strong desire to see fruitfulness abound in every area of our life. We have come to the place in our journey that when we feel the "growth pains" we recognize them as part of the process and we know that something sweeter, more beautiful, is about to breakthrough in our lives. We EMBRACE this! We actually LOOK for it on a daily basis. The strongest trees are the ones that have the deepest roots. I challenge you today, to look at whatever difficulty you may be facing as an opportunity to GROW through something. Embrace this "temporary season", stay with the process! The very thing you face and grow through, has the potential to spring up results in your life that are sweeter and stronger than you can imagine. Dont cut yourself short; we think you're worth it!
Michael and Christine Baker live in Camas, Washington with their two children, Gabe and Alyssa. They are work-from-home parents who earn an average income of $20,000 per month.
