From master storyteller Shel Silverstein comes this epic tale of a luckless gambler's duel with the Devil.
Having lost his soul at dice, Billy Markham endeavors to con his way out of Hell and into Heaven.
A twisted comic ride full of sinners, schemers, and saints, "The Devil and Billy Markham" is one helluva good time!
...if Johnny Cash had played dice with the Devil and lost, it would have probably gone something like this.

"The Devil walked into Linbaugh's
On a rainy Nashville night
Where the lost souls sat and sipped their soup
in the sickly yellow neon light..."
"The Devil and Billy Markham" was first published in Playboy Magazine's January 1979 issue. It was published as an epic poem in "doggeral" form along with accompagning sketches by Shel Silverstein.
In 1989 "The Devil and Billy Markham" was staged in conjunction with David Mamet's "Bobby Gould in Hell" as a one-act double bill entitled "Oh, Hell!" at the Lincoln Center in New York.
The STORYTELLER was played by Dennis Locorriere and the piece was directed by Glen Mosher.
If you don't feel like reading Playboy for the articles, you can find both "Billy Markham" and "Bobby Gould in Hell" published as "Oh, Hell!" TheatreBooks keeps it in stock where it sells for $11.99
Produced through an arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.
So begins this epic tale of damnation and salvation in a world of sinners, schemers, saints, and the blues.
When luckless gambler Billy Markham loses his soul to the Devil in a game of dice, they both get more than they bargained for, as Billy tries his darndest to con his way out of Hell and win a seat in Heaven.
The result is a bawdy and hilarious ride to Hell and back (and then back again) as Billy and the Devil match wits and encounter all sorts of characters from legendary hustler Scuzzy Sleezo, to the Lord Himself (who, as it turns out, plays a mean game of pool).
Recounted by a mysterious janitor who may just be more than he seems (or does he just have too much time on his hands?) "The Devil and Billy Markham" is one helluva ride guaranteed to leave you grinning, devilishly...
Beloved by young and old, Shel Silverstein is an internationally acclaimed poet, writer, musician, and artist.
Shel grew up in Chicago, and began creating cartoons for adults in "Stars and Stripes" while serving as a GI in Japan and Korea. His best known adult work was published in "Playboy Magazine" from the 50's to the 70's where he was a regular contributor. He is also know for penning "A Boy Named Sue" for Johnny Cash.
Despite his popularity amongst adults, Shel is perhaps best known for his children's books of poems, which include "Where the Sidewalk Ends," "A Light in the Attic," and the beloved "Giving Tree."
A new collection of unpublished poems (as yet untitled) will be released next year.
Shel passed away from a heart attack in 1999. www.shelsilverstein.com
