Fifth grade
This week the sixth graders read "Role-Playing and The Adventures of Nat Love." These selections compared narrative nonfiction and autobiographies plus the tone of each selection. In English, we expanded our study of pronouns with four charts of pronouns. We were able to use the Herald Democrat with our pronoun lessons. For spelling the focus was on compound words. They learned that compound words can take three forms: with a hyphen such as twenty-three, together such as greenhouse, and separated such as fairy tales.
This week the fifth graders read "We Were There Too!" This selection focused on the role that children played in the Revolutionary War. The skill this week was comparison/contrast and using Venn Diagrams as graphic organizers. For STARR preparation, the students examined suffixes and figurative language.
So, when you tell them to put a little elbow grease into cleaning their rooms, they should know what you mean.
