Chapter 1: Summer Bliss
July.
--- The Account of Seiji Narimiya ---
She looked at me with a smile on her face.
I smiled back.
It was summer. School was off. I was in complete bliss.
There was nothing better than this.
With her beside me, nothing can go wrong.
"Let's go." I heard myself say.
She nodded.
Chapter 2: Summer Bliss
The water was cool, a refreshing touch on our feet.
I heard a loud splash and felt a wall of cold wash over me.
I turn to a giggling Uchida Aoi. I smiled roguishly.
Suddenly, I put my hand in the water and gave some right back at her.
She screamed when she was dripping wet too.
In revenge, she unleashed a tsunami at me. Instead, laughing, I rushed over, wrapping my wet arms around her and tackled her into the water.
With a crash and splash, we plunged into the water, squealing.
Summer meant no cares in the world. Summer meant happiness. That's what I always thought.
Chapter 3: Summer Bliss
"It's so hot..." She said dreamily.
"Yeah. I know eh? Want to go swimming again?" I grinned.
"No way!"
We were drying our t-shirts in the sun now. Even our swim suits were drying against our skin. I could feel the scalding sand underneath me as I sat there.
"That was fun.. Ne, I want to have as many good memories as I can this summer." She looked thoughtful. "Somehow that's what I feel. Make as many memories so we can always remember and cherish it."
I loved her the way she was. She is the sweetest person ever. Yes, Aoi-chan, I'll always remember you. No matter what.
Chapter 4: Summer Bliss
The next moment, we were in Shibuya, pushing our way through the weekend crowds. Hand in hand, we would never let go.
The blaring, flashing night city lights made our spirits dance with excitement. We were nearly jumping, in our bodies, wanting to leave our earthly flesh behind. We were holding hands, swimming through the sea of people.
“Hey, where are we going?” I asked as Aoi pulled me along.
“It’s a surprise!”
“Eh?? That’s almost too much excitement for a night.” I said, laughing.
Chapter 5: Summer Bliss
“And now, we have the band, Eden, who was nominated by all of you as the New Rising Star. Please give a warm welcome!”
I heard the crowd roar, the atmosphere so charged I could feel the electricity running up my spine. It was a glorious night, the stage lights were flashing in multi-colours. I cheered my throat hoarse and clapped my hands red.
Aoi was grinning the whole time when she led me to the live house. She told me to wait to see who was playing. She had me guessing the whole time.
She nudged me and smiled. Then she grabbed my hand and gave me a quick squeeze.
I gave her a squeeze back and turned my attention to the stage.
On the stage, I saw five guys walk up the stairs, holding their instruments like weapons. They looked like brave soldiers ready for war. I wished I could be up there.
I saw them get into position, and noticed the lead singer, who had his back turned and was talking to the band members. He looked familiar.
Then he turned around, his bangs flipping out of his face. I stared.
Chapter 6: Summer Bliss
I recognized him immediately. It was Yuya. Uchida Yuya. Another words, Aoi’s older brother.
I haven’t seen him in a month at least. He had been the person I always looked up to. He was tall, with good looks, wearing his long hair cooler than anyone I’ve ever seen. He was calm and collected, but had a gentle heart. Most importantly, he played the guitar and sang.
I remembered how he lent me his old guitar a few years back, when I just started middle school. Ever since then, I had been aiming to excel at my guitar skills, and to catch up to him.
I turned to look at Aoi who was grinning from ear to ear. She looked so cute and excited.
“Surprised?”
“Heck yeah.” I replied. “How come you never told me?”
“I only just found out a week ago. I decided to give you a surprise.” She told me, giggling.
“Well, thanks. It’s a pleasant surprise.”
I turned back to the band. Eden. That was their band’s name? Yuya never told me. He told me that they hadn’t decided on a name yet. But that was a month ago. It was such a cool name.
Aoi’s brother slipped on his guitar. A shining brilliantly white Gibson Les Paul. I would boast that it was one of the best guitars to ever play. I haven’t played it yet, but I knew Yuya had the best taste when it came to guitars.
He looked at the crowd. I hoped he saw me and Aoi. Then he gave a lop-sided grin and said, “Let’s rock on!”
Then the drums hit and the show started. It was definitely a pleasant surprise.
Chapter 7: Summer Bliss
When it was done, we went to say hi.
“Hey sis.” He said. He looked at me and gave me a grin. “Ah, Seiji. How’s it going?” He glanced at both of us. “How are you two love birds doing?”
Aoi blushed. “Oni-chan!!”
“How’s your guitar playing going?” Yuya asked me.
“Great.”
“I heard you’ve been writing again.”
“Yep.” I smiled, feeling victorious.
“That’s good. Some day, let me hear your songs. Maybe we can play it together on stage.” He clapped me on the shoulder.
“Maybe. But my songs aren’t any good.”
“You’ll get there with more practice.”
I gave a curt nod. “I’ll do my best.”
“Ah, I’ve got to run.” Yuya straightened up.
“Take care you two.”
“Alright. Later!”
Chapter 8: Summer Bliss
We headed back out on the street, feeling refreshed from the concert. I went and bought two sodas from the vending machine on the street.
The lights on the streets were still going on, but we both felt kind of tired. Loud music, shouting and jumping is bound to tire people out. We sat down on a bench and sipped our drinks.
I felt really good. Stretching out my legs, I looked up at the night sky. It was a clear sky, there was a bright moon. Even though there were so many lights in the city, it was still shining happily.
“I had a lot of fun.” I heard her say.
I smiled. “So did I. Thanks for that little extra surprise.”
“It is your birthday after all.”
I paused. “Birthday??” I had completely forgotten about my birthday. I was having too much fun. I would be turning 16 tomorrow.
“You forgot??” She laughed. “Stupid.”
I laughed. “Stupid? You’re calling your boyfriend stupid? What does that make you?”
She grinned. “Smart. I deliberately picked a stupid boyfriend so I can boss you around.”
“Ouch.” She had me there. I grinned. I loved her smarts. She was the smartest girl in school, and she was going out with me.
Chapter 9: Summer Bliss
"Happy Birthday!" They chanted in unison.
I closed my eyes for a moment and pretended to make a wish. I didn't though because I believed I had everything I could ever wish for. I was content with my life. I just wished it would stay this way. Maybe I should have made a wish.
I blew out the candles and smiled. I glanced around. All my friends were here, except for Aoi. Of all times, she wasn’t here. But it was okay, we’ll probably have our own little private celebration later on.
"Give us a speech dude!" A few of the guys shouted.
I cleared my throat.
"Thanks. Feeling good to be 16...” I looked at the group. There were probably around ten in the room. The closest of my friends. There was a lot more I want to say to them.
“We've been through a lot haven't we?… I remember sneaking around in the school at night, trying to set people up. And the culture festival, when we pulled off that huge play. Skipping classes to play beach volleyball. So many things happened.” I paused.
“Well I must say, I'm really happy, I have everything I could ever wish for. Somehow, fate pulled us together. Don't forget those times we had. Even if some of us are going to different schools. Thanks for coming. And thanks for the good times."
I was surprised that I made such an elaborate speech. So I grinned, and made a gun with my fingers. It was the signature hand sign stolen from some drama. Bang.
I looked around again, and a few of the girls looked like they were on the verge of tears. I nearly laughed. It was a good day.
Anyhow, it was time to cut the cake.
Chapter 10: Summer Bliss
Just as I was raising the knife, my cell phone rang.
“Moshi, moshi?”
“Hey, it’s Miko.”
“Where are you?”
“Sorry I’m not there but… Actually, I’m at Aoi’s place. She’s fast asleep… She won’t wake up. You should come wake her up.”
“Eh?”
Why was she sleeping?
I hastily finished cutting the cake, and told my friends that I would be back in a bit.
Then I rushed out the door over to Aoi’s house.
Chapter 11: Summer Bliss
I couldn’t help but wonder why she was still in bed. It was past noon. I wasn’t angry with her, she must have her reasons. But instead I was worried. Was she sick?
When I got there the front door was open, beckoning me in.
I knocked. “Hello?”
Not a soul.
I pushed the door open and went inside. The stairs were on the right and I climbed up, heading for her room.
“Seiji-kun!” I heard a voice call from the top of the stairs.
“Miko-chan… what happened? Why’s she sleeping?”
Miko only smiled.
I pushed Aoi’s door open and went inside.
“Aoi?” I asked slowly.
Chapter 12: Summer Bliss
Not a soul in sight. Her room was the usual, neat and tidy. Her bed was made, and she definitely was not asleep. Only a set of pyjamas lay strewn on the bed, as if she left in a hurry. I could still smell her scent, which was a mix of the shampoo she used and strawberries. I always wondered why I smelled strawberries in her room.
I looked around the room one more time. This time my eyes found something on her desk. A white piece of paper.
It was a note. Her printing was small and neat, written in light blue ink
Seiji,
When you are reading this, you might have just cut the cake. I couldn’t tell you last night, but while you were sleeping, I was busy preparing this… hope you will enjoy it!
I will be waiting at the end of it at 3:30… come find me! =)
Love,
Aoi
There was a key and a mailbox number at the end of the note.
I nearly laughed out loud. She would never cease to surprise me.
Chapter 13: Summer Bliss
I scrambled out the door seeing how Miko had disappeared. The only logical mailbox she had keys to, were her own. That's where it probably started.
The mailbox was in front of her house.
I pried open the door carefully.
There was only one thing inside, and I recognized it right away. It was a simple photo of the two of us in our cultural festival outfits. Our middle school.
Was she waiting there? Or was it another clue. Geez, if she could be clearer. What did she have planned?
But I didn't waste any time and headed for the school.
Chapter 14: Summer Bliss
The walk to the school was around fifteen minutes. We used to walk this route together all the time. I would wait for Aoi-chan at her front porch before we went together.
Just around halfway my cell phone rang.
“Hey Seiji… where’d you go?” It was my friend.
“Aoi had something prepared for me, I’ll be gone for a while. Eat the cake! Tell my mom to be nice to you.”
He laughed. “Ah. I see. Some private time ne? Alright, see you later.”
I hung up.
Back to the present, I had a feeling of urgency. I never want to be separated from Aoi for too long, and she would probably be feeling the same way. We were inseperable, growing up as kids together and dating for years. She was a large part of my life. Half of my heart probably belonged to her. I don’t know what would happen if one of us left the other. But it actually might not be too healthy this way.
I heard my cell phone ring again. I stopped and pulled out the phone.
Looking at the display, it told me it was Aoi-chan. She’s calling? I thought this was supposed to be a game.
“Aoi-chan?”
Chapter 15: Summer Bliss
There was silence over the phone.
Eh? “Moshi moshi? You finally call… I missed you..” I said. “What’s up? Aoi-chan…”
There was a crackle. Then I heard a man’s voice. I stared at the phone.
“Narimiya Seiji.” He sounded like he was older than me.
“Yes…?” Why was he calling with Aoi’s cell phone? What’s going on?
“Come to the rooftop of the school. If you want to see Aoi again.” He paused. “Come alone.” His voice was frightening.
I couldn’t help but exploded. “What??? What do you mean?? What happened to her?”
He didn’t reply to my questions. Instead he said, “I hate the likes of you.”
That was the last thing I heard. He hung up.
Chapter 16: Phone Call
I stood there in shock for a few seconds. My body wouldn’t respond.
Only thoughts shot through my head. Who was he? What’s going on? What does he mean? Aoi-chan? Is she in danger? If you want to see Aoi again? What does that mean? Who was he? He kidnapped Aoi? Is this a kidnapping? Rooftop? What was he doing with her? Who was he? Was he some prankster or serious?
Come alone? I can’t even call the police? What did he want with us?
There was no way this was happening to me.
I was sweating.
I didn’t know what to do.
I felt like I was dreaming, or rather having a nightmare.
What if something happened to her? Can I live without her?
That thought flashed through my mind. Then I realized I can’t let that happen. That’s when my body kicked into action. I could feel my blood pounding through my body.
There was no way I could let it happen. I have to find her.
Chapter 17: Phone Call
I raced through the neighbourhood into the school. The sun flashed by, scattering its rays through the windows. In a few minutes I was inside, speeding through the deserted hallways.
Thousands of memories flooded back.
I could see my friends laughing and joking.
I could hear the voices of the students.
I could see Aoi and I sitting on the rooftop together to eat our lunches.
But I brushed away the thoughts. I couldn’t let these memories affect my mind now.
I didn’t know who he was, but I knew I was going to do everything I can to save her.
If I had to fight, if it meant to protect her, I would. I could hold my own in a fight.
I knew I would even die for her if I had to.
Chapter 18: Phone Call
I got up on the rooftop in record time.
We used to eat here. My friends and I would climb over the fence and hang our feet off of the roof edge.
Three years ago, I gave Aoi her present on “White Day”, one month after Valentine’s here. I had received a mountain of presents from girls in my classes, for the first time, I realized people were actually paying attention to me. And for the first time, I “replied” to Aoi.
I think I ignored everyone else at that time, causing a large commotion in what social scene we had in middle school. I have yet learned to have more tact though.
Emerging out of the stairwell, the sun was bearing down hard. I tried not to squint as I scanned the rooftop. It was in the same state as it was years ago.
But with one glance I could tell it was empty.
She wasn’t here.
Chapter 19: Phone Call
I headed across the rooftop and got to the fence on one side. I made a fist and slammed it hard, not caring anymore. The fence shook and rattled. Damn it. I closed my eyes.
For a few moments there was silence. I could only feel the sun on my neck.
Silence didn’t help. It made things worse.
I didn’t know what to think or what to feel. The last few minutes had been so unreal. It didn’t feel like I was part of this.
My mind was blank. But at the same time it was a whirlpool that I couldn’t make any sense of.
I could only hear the words of the man that called echo over and over in my head. I could only hear my own heart pounding, rumbling through my whole body.
I wanted to cry, I wanted to shout, I wanted something, anything. But nothing came. I tried to picture Aoi-chan in my head but there was nothing.
I desperately tried to remember her face, her soft hair, her warm hand in mine, her head against my shoulder, her smile, but there was nothing.
The only thing left now was the thought that spun through my head. What if I could never see her again? What if I couldn’t see her smile again? Feel her fingertips against my palm? What if I couldn’t hold her again?
It dawned on me how precious she was to me. Only I suddenly realized that I hadn’t cherished her enough.
I collasped to the ground. My body felt like it was completely drained of energy.
Chapter 20: Phone Call
I opened my eyes.
Something was different about the field today.
Something in pink was shining under the sun. It was a weird sight. I first thought it was done as a part of the court.
Then I realized what it was. My eyes started to tear up.
The pink chalk was clearly definted, drawn carefully on the court below. It was a giant birthday cake, and written in the middle was a simple message.
Love eternally…
Happy 16th Birthday, Narimiya Seiji
It pierced my heart suddenly, sending aching rivets of pain throughout my body. I clutched at my chest where my heart would be. I could hardly breath.
This was what she planned all along? Aoi-chan… Tears threatened to overflow. She made this all last night? She is so thoughtful. It was beautiful. This was such a beautiful scene. It didn’t deserve to be happening now. It would have been so sweet, but instead bittersweet now. She was in danger. She risked her life to do this for me.
I wanted to scream. Where was she?
Chapter 21: Phone Call
My cell phone rang again.
Damn it.
I picked up.
“Moshi moshi?” My voice wavered.
It was the guy. “Actually, you’re at the wrong place.” He laughed hideously. “Come to the shrine next to the school.” He paused. “How ironic isn’t it?”
“You bastard --!! I won’t let you get away with this!” I swore at him, but was cut off.
There was only silence over the line.
I slammed my fist into the fence one last time before spinning around, shaking with anger. I felt tears of frustration. It wasn’t worry or fear anymore, I was filled with contempt and rage. Who could do something like this to us? I would not forgive them.
I took off down the stairs and out of the school.
I hoped I wasn’t too late.
Chapter 22: Phone Call
The shrine was close to the school, it was only a five minute walk. But I got there within two minutes.
The trees around were getting dense but I saw the clearing up ahead. I could see the main entrance to the shrine’s yard. We used to come here to make wishes together.
I was panting by the time I reached the front and gave the heavy gates a push. It was locked. I swore and shook the gates.
It wouldn’t budge. Cursing, I jumped and struggled to haul myself over the top.
I dropped over on the other side, landing on my feet hard. My heels would be a bit sore. But I didn’t care.
I didn’t skip a beat, moving forward, as I looked towards the shrine, I saw someone there, sitting off to the side. I couldn’t tell who it was, as there were a few bushes in the way.
Was it the kidnapper? Or Aoi? Was it a trap? I rushed there, poised and ready for anything, uncertain what was to unfold.
My muscles tensed up. I felt adrenaline rushing through my body. My heart was pounding hard. I had no idea what I was up against. All I knew was that I needed her to be fine.
Chapter 23: Phone Call
“Aoi?” My voice cracked. It never does.
I saw a petite figure sitting, with very familiar short hair that reached down to the bottom of her neck. It had to be Aoi.
She turned, startled, and stood up. She looked at me in surprise. For me, I couldn’t feel anything but relief that I could see Aoi standing there right in front of me.
“Seii-kun? What are you doing here?”
I didn’t answer. I was numb from fear, and from anger. I couldn’t think of anything to say. Instead of replying, I rushed over with much determination and wrapped my arms around her, hugging her tight to my body. I felt her eyes fly open in delighted surprise.
“You’re… safe….” I mumbled in her ear. I felt tears threatening to build up. I was so relieved. I wouldn’t know what to do without her.
She sounded confused. “Of course I am… Silly, what were you thinking?” I felt her arms reach around me and hug me back. I felt my body relax. I finally was able to breath.
Chapter 24: Phone Call
“You weren’t… kidnapped?” I asked hesitantly. I let go and held her shoulders, looking her in the eye.
“What?” She raised her eyebrows. She gave me a weird look.
“Wait. Where’s your cell phone?” I still felt tense and wound up but the words that came out were calm.
She looked confused and bit her lip. She checked her bag.
“Oh, I think I left it at home.” She told me.
I exhaled. “Baka…” I felt my mind relax.
“What?”
I explained the story. “I got a call from your cell phone. The guy said to come here alone or you would be in danger. So I ran here…”
“Eh??”
“Yeah..” I exhaled again and looked at the ground. “I was so scared.. What if something happened to you?”
Then she looked at me with a different look. She looked happy and gave me a shy smile.
“What?” I asked.
“Nothing.” She looked down at her shoes. Then she looked back up. “Wait, but who was it?”
“I don’t know, but someone has your phone.”
There was silence for a moment. Then she tilted her head up and gave me a quick kiss.
It was my turn to be surprised.
“It’s okay.” She looked at me closely. “It doesn’t matter anymore because you’re here.”
I smiled at her. I felt so many happy feelings that I felt confused. It was such a sudden contrast to the feelings I felt just minutes ago. That’s the type of feelings she has the power to give me.
Chapter 25: Phone Call
“Alright, let’s go make a wish.” She said with a radiant smile.
“What? Why?”
She smiled, grabbed my hand and ushered us to the shrine.
We clapped our hands together three times and bowed.
I paused. What should I wish for? I felt like I had everything in the world. I didn’t need anything. As long as she was fine, I would be okay.
I stole a glance at Aoi. She looked so happy and so peaceful, her eyes closed and her hands clasped.
I closed my eyes.
Kami-sama, I wish that Aoi would always be this happy and loved by people around her. Protect her and never let her be in danger. I wish that I will always be by her side forever.
That was my only wish. As long as she was happy, I would be happy.
Chapter 26: What a Birthday
“I’m glad you came here. But you’re really early.” She said. We were walking hand in hand away from the shrine.
“Early? Oh yeah.. I only got up to the first clue in the mailbox.”
She looked worried for a second. “Did you get up on the roof?”
Was those clues supposed to lead me up to the roof too, so I can see the cake? “Yeah, the kidnapper called me and told me that you were on the roof at first.” I smiled at her. “I saw the cake….”
She smiled back.
“It was really sweet.”
She stopped and turned to me. “Actually I have something to give you.”
She put her hands in her pocket and came out with my gift.
It was wrapped neatly in box. She presented it to me shyly. “Hope you’ll like it.”
I smiled. “Thanks.” I took it in my hands and looked down at it. “It really doesn’t matter what you give me… being with you is the best gift already.” I paused and then said in a serious tone. “I promise you, I will never leave your side. I’ll protect you.”
I think she blushed.
Chapter 27: What a Birthday
I peeked inside the box.
Sitting in the middle on a silky cushion was another box, a tiny wooden box. Engraved on the top were two surnames, Narimiya and Uchida. I let my eyes take in the box. It seemed like the most fascinating thing I’ve ever seen. Somehow, I was mesmerized by it’s simplicity. But I felt like it held deep emotions inside it.
I glanced at Aoi-chan and smiled. Her eyes looked up at me curiously, waiting to see my reaction.
“Open it.” She said softly.
I reached inside and took out the small wooden box. I think I knew what it was. And I knew it would be one of my most cherished treasures in the future.
Chapter 28: What a Birthday
It’s song floated around us, its gentle touch speaking to our hearts. I could feel the emotions Aoi gives me, the overwhelming happiness, the peace and comfort, a hint of playfulness, full of tender love.
I was swept away into a land of dreams, a perfect world, a peace that never shatters. Hand in hand, our souls dancing on a light breeze that was the music.
I couldn’t help but smile. It sweetly sang to us. It sung to me a song in Aoi’s voice.
“It’s a song I wrote on the piano.” I looked at her. “The one I was working on.” She told me softly. “I put it in this music box so you’ll be able to hear it all the time.”
“Thanks…why didn’t you play it for me earlier? It’s a beautiful song.” I gave her a hug. “It reminds me of you.”
She gave me a quirky smile. “I wanted it to be a surprise."
Chapter 29: What a Birthday
“There’s one more thing. Give me your cell phone.” She said more firmly now.
I raised my eyebrows but passed her my phone.
She turned around to prevent me from seeing anything. What was it?
“Don’t look!” She said as I tried to sidestep around her.
I grinned but stayed still.
After a moment, she slowly turned around.
“Tadaa!” She held up my phone for me to see.
At first I only saw my cell phone but then I looked down and there was something hanging off of it.
“Keep it on your phone always. I won’t forgive you if you take it off.” She said smiling.
It was a protector charm from the shrine, an omamori.
“I made it myself. You’ll be protected.”
I took the cell phone and touched the red charm. It was really soft. “I’ll keep it on for sure. Thanks.” I grinned. “Since I swear to always be with you, it’ll work for both of us won’t it?”

The Story of A Gucci Bag
A Collection of Short Stories
What's in a bag?
If bags could speak, what kind of story would it tell of its owner? What kind of places, near and far, cross oceans, deserts and mountains would it speak of? What kind of romance would it remember? What treasures did it hold inside?
These are their stories.
Inspired from the "What's In My Bag?" Flickr group, I will attempt my hand at this project, a collection of short romantic tales, to imagine what the owners are like, and tell the stories of each owner of the bags in each picture.
*I will probably fail miserably, but I hope to breathe life, and bring out the personality of the owners of these bags and its respective items. Please don't hate me if I fail. I am finding this a pretty hard project to undertake XD
