Nuit Blanche
w a t e rby Mindy alexander & Harbir RehillSubmerge yourself in an audio-visual journey of water. What: Nuit BlancheWhere: The Artbar of the Gladstone hotel (1214 Queen Street West, Toronto)When: October 1st, Sunset - October 2nd, Sunrise.Check out some samples below from music producer Harbir Rehill and at the following link: When Lions RoarArtists’ Statement:Water is constantly changing. Wind currents, the pull of the moon, the movement of underwater creatures, the release of methane gas, boats, tornadoes, oil spills, industry, waste dumping, irrigation, and precipitation are some of the many influences that are constantly keeping water in a state of flux.Like the air that flows through our lungs to the blood that runs through our veins, we depend on the natural cycles of this most basic necessity of life. However, we continue to increase the relentless pressure that we place on this valuable resource. We demand more and more through our showers, green grass, production of plastic and oil, the foods we import, the electricity dams can generate, and so on.The viewer is surrounded by an overwhelming illusion of water, as well as an auditory journey of its connection to life and death. The viewer is asked to contemplate many aspects of its ephemeral nature: •The visual and auditory patterns suggest a natural rhythm and flow, imitating the rhythmic cycle of waves along with breaths, heartbeats, and lifelines. •The scale of the visual component and the intensity of the sounds are a reminder of the sheer force of water. •The plastic material thumbs its nose at sustainability while the black glossiness brings to mind oil and the lifelessness of the global oceans that continues to expand as a result of our previously mentioned abuses. •The stark contrast of positive and negative space alludes to the absence of water. The room, after all, is empty and the work includes no actual water. This references the expanding scarcity of the precious resource including droughts. The installation invites the participants on a journey from a gentle meditative environment to a chaotic atmosphere, representing the increasingly dangerous global situations surrounding issues of water.
