While painting it is my intent to capture a split second of the racing thoughts that fill my mind. I work from the feelings I have at the moment I am painting. Working fast and spontaneously, I try to keep up with the images and colors as they take form on the canvas. My thoughts are the underpainting over which I layer paint and drawing materials to achieve a surface worthy of expressing the complexity of thought.
I am greatly influenced by the seemingly spontaneous work of Arshile Gorky. I admire his use of line, which acts both dependently and independently of the forms and shapes in his paintings. Viewing his work (even in small scale) gives me visual fuel.
I always come back to a quote I discovered a few years ago, but have since forgotten its author: Artists offer us a glimpse of the world, not as it is, but as our starved senses desire it to be. This best describes the way I feel about art. I choose to paint the unseen images in my mind, because they will never be seen unless I make them real.
