    Domain connections - limitation?

    Ticket by britanniadance97 | August 13, 2014 | Question
    • Hi

My new website has a domain britanniadance.co.uk

My old website had two domains dancebristol.co.uk and dancestroud.co.uk

Up til this week and since the new website I had dancestroud redirecting to britanniadance.co.uk which worked sucessfully following your instructions to connect external domains. This week I also went to redirect dancebristol to britanniadance (and so intended to completely phase out the old site for searchers to only only find the new one) However, this automatically stopped the most well known britanniadance domain from linking to the new site! Is there some kind of limit or is there a way I can get the one main domain working with two redirects to the new site?

Thanks in advance for your response...I really would love to get all three working correctly.

      Sam

      Hi Sam,

Thank you for contacting Wix Support regarding this matter.

In order to connect a secondary domain to your current domain, please make sure to add the new domain to your account as well (use the already have a domain link). Once both domains are listed in your domain manager, please follow these instructions:

Step 1: Decide which domain address is your primary one ( www.exampledomain.com).  The other domain address ( www.exampledomain2.com) will be your secondary.

Step 2: Connect your primary domain to your Wix site.

Step 3: Once you have connected your primary domain to your Wix site, from the top menu, hover over Subscriptions > click Domains > next to your secondary domain, click Manage.

From Domain Summary, under Domain Connects To, click Change >  from the pop-up window, select To another domain name > choose your primary domain from the drop down menu > click Save.

Your domain name is now redirected! You will be able to see this under the Domain Summary. Please make sure you click the Check Connection button in the Domain Summary section to verify that the connection was successful.

To connect a third domain, repeat Step 3, using your third domain name.

Note: Please allow 24 hours for the redirection to propagate before your secondary domain will redirect to your primary domain. For the first 24 hours, the website will be available under two domain names (both the primary and secondary domain). After 24 hours, when typing the secondary domain name, the address in the browser's address bar will change to your primary domain name.

Note: If your primary domain name is not connected to Wix correctly, the redirection will not work. You will receive an error message. In this case, go back and make sure that your primary domain is connected properly.

Note: You can add up to 3 external domains to your account per premium plan, however there is no limitation on the number of domains that can be redirected to a specific site.
There is no limit on domains that are hosted by Wix.

Please let us know should you require any further assistance.

      Nitzan

Really appreciate the reply however I'm having major problems with it still.

I've followed your guidelines but whenever I connect the site to any one of the 3 domains its bumps off the other one. I can now only get one site connected (while the other two domains don't work at all) Its causing a major problem so please can you help.

I have a premium plan so should be able to get all working and I've also added the Wix names servers onto my external registrar 123 Reg so it should be able to work.

At the foot of the domains section it lists two of them as 'connects to N/A' so when I go into 'manage' to connect the one which was connected before then says N/A as it reconnects the other one!

Surely this can be fixed. To add to it the dancebristol domain name has also stopped receiving emails which is my primary email account (this happened since I changed this) so my business is majorly suffering.

Hope to hear from you real soon

      Thanks

      Sam

      Dear Sam,

Thank you for contacting Wix support. We are deeply sorry for the inconvenience.

Please let us know what should be the main domain for your Wix site as we would like to test this issue on our end (we will try to connect the two other domains to your website).

Thanks for the patience, we are waiting for your reply.

      Thanks, Rony

Thank you - I'm sure its all on the thread but the main domain is britanniadance.co.uk

the ones I'm trying to redirect are from dancebristol.co.uk and dancestroud.co.uk (previously domains for my old website) so they then link into the newer brtanniadance.co.uk website.

My customers will currently get a 'trying to connect your wix site to your domain' page which is really not a good thing. I had the dancestroud one working previously working fine but since I tried to also set up a redirect for the dancebristol.co.uk the other two keep jumping off whenever I set one up????

Really hope you can figure this out for me.

      Thanks

      Sam

Thank you for setting up the redirects for the additional domain names - I would have liked to know why it was causing a problem for me. More importantly since I tried to set them up myself my emails to these redirected domains (info@dancebristol.co.uk and info@dancestroud.co.uk) have not been receiving and bouncing back to all my customers which is causing massive disruption to my business!

123-reg have sent me an email through support stating the following below....(but I'm worried this will then affect the website redirects. Please confirm if so. Surely I should be able to do both)

It is vital I get both working together so would appreciate your input.

      From 123 Reg....

"How do I point my domain at 123-reg MX Records for Email

In order to add 123-reg MX records for your domain name so that 123-reg email works, please do the following:

Firstly, you need to ensure your domain is pointed to our nameservers:

      ns.123-reg.co.uk
      ns2.123-reg.co.uk

If the domain is not pointed to the 123-reg nameservers, you will be unable to manage them from the 123-reg control panel.

For more information on changing your nameservers please view the following article:

How do I change the nameservers for my domain name?"

      Hi Sam,

Please note that in order to keep your mailboxes running and functioning you will need to add MX records to your Wix account.

You can keep your domains connected to Wix's name servers and add MX records that 123- reg will be able to provide you with. It is not necessary to revert the name server connection to 123-reg.

An MX record, or mail exchange record, is used to map a domain name to a list of message transfer agents for that domain. You can add or update MX records from the Domains page of your Wix account.

To add or update MX records: Sign in to your Wix account > from the top menu, hover over Subscriptions > click Domains > under My Domains, next to the relevant domain, click Manage.

At the bottom of Domain Summary, next to Email (MX Records):, click Add > select I have an email provider > from the drop down menu, choose Other > add or update the MX records > click Save.

Note: An MX record is an address, not an IP number. An example of an MX record is: mx1.biz.mail.yahoo.com

Note: Use lowercase letters only when entering your MX records.

Note: If your domain is connected to your Wix site via Pointing, your domain host is in control of your MX records.

      Hi Noa

Many thanks for your reply. I'm having a major headache with this as I'm getting different stories from wix and 123 reg as to how to resolve the matter. My problem is that all this is far too technical for me to understand now too. 123 Reg have confirmed I need to go through the 123 nameservers and then point the domain name to an ip address (which presumably I need to get from you)

I was pleased that you connected up the two website redirects but I still couldn't receive work emails so took advice from 123 to go through there nameservers (so now the dancebristol.co.uk website redirect isnt working and causing a disaster for my business again) and now they ask me to add an a name etc which I'm not confident doing.

Can you kindly provide the 3 redirects as you did before and set up the mx records for me so I can continue to receive emails from dancebristol and dance stroud please. This is majorly important that I have both running simultaeously but would really appreciate you doing it for me if you can.

      Thanks

      Sam

      Hi Sam,

      Thank you for contacting us.

I have reconnected your domains as per your request. However, for the domain  dancebristol.co.uk, the pointing configuration in your registrar 123-reg is incorrect. To fix this, please follow the instructions here.

Regarding the MX Records, I have updated them so they point to 123-Reg.co.uk name servers.  You can find the instructions on how to update MX Records for 123-Reg.co.uk by clicking here.

Please contact us if you require any further assistance.
