• Overview

    Now that you understand SEO and how it works a bit better, it’s time to put this new knowledge to work and start optimizing your website.
    If you are a first time Wix user, we recommend that you read our Getting Started: SEO help page, before proceeding through this section.
    At Wix, you can be sure that we are doing everything we can to make sure that your site is crawled by Google and other search engines.
    We constantly develop Wix to remain on the cutting edge of SEO.
    Once you have updated your SEO settings, it usually takes anywhere from 1 to 3 months for search engines, such as Google, to crawl your site and update their database. However, this just means your website will be indexed. Finding your website using your relevant keywords in an organic search may take even more time.

    SEO requires time and commitment; setting yourself realistic goals and expectations is important.

    One thing you can do to immediately improve your SEO is to connect your own domain name to your Wix site. You can do this via upgrading. Learn more about upgrading your website here.

    While we at Wix are doing our part, there are many elements required from your side.
    Below is an outline of the steps needed to ensure that your site is getting optimum attention from search engines.

    You can also submit your website to the following search engines by clicking on the links: Google or Bing.

  • Update your Meta Tags

    Meta Tags are text elements that are not visible to your website’s visitors but provide important information to search engine crawlers e.g. Google.

    This information includes your:

    • Site Title
    • Site Description
    • Keywords

    Wix submits your Meta tag data directly to Google. All you need to do is update the information within the Site Optimization area accessible within your editor.

    With the Wix HTML5 editor, it’s possible to add meta tags to each page of your website. But first you need to update your site meta information.

    Pages in which you won't set specific meta information to, will use the site meta information.

    Updating your Site Meta Tags

    To Access the Site Meta Tags area:

    1) Open the website editor
    2) To the left of the editor, click the Settings icon
    3) From the Settings options, click SEO (Google)
    4) When the SEO settings options pop-up, the first thing you need to do is select the checkbox that reads ‘Allow search engines to find my website’

    Now fill in the Site Title, Site Description and Keywords, following this advice.

    When you’re done updating this information, click Done and Save your changes.

    Site Title:

    Your Site Title is the headline of your website. It is not visible on your webpage but appears at the top of your browser window.

    In Google and other search engines your Site Title is displayed as the headline of your website.

    Search engines read your website's Site Title in the same way we read a headline of a newspaper. Your Site Title is also used:

    • When saving to favorites.
    • When sharing your website on Facebook/ Google+ and other sharing platforms.

    Important points for writing your Site Title:

    • Site Title must not exceed 50 characters long, spaces included.
    • Begin your Site Title with your business name.
    • If you are a local business include your city/state/county/suburb. Local information helps Search Engines to direct local users attracting more visits from local searches.
    • Try incorporating your most relevant search phrase in your Site Title i.e. the word you think a client would type into a Search Engine search to find your website.
    • Make sure your Site Title is easy to read and attractive - A relevant and descriptive Site Title is more likely to attract users to 'click' in Search Engine results.
    • Use the pipe sign (|) to distinguish different parts in your Site Title.

    Site Title example: Hair By Alla | Hairstylist in La Verne, Los Angeles

    Site Description:

    Description provides the user a summary of what your website is about. It is not visible on your webpage but appears below your Site Title in search engine results.

    Important points for writing your Description:

    • Description must not be less than 50 characters or exceed 160 characters (Google trims the description after 160 characters), spaces included. Use this link to check the character count of your site description.
    • Your Description is an opportunity to advertise your website. It allows a user to know what your website is about in relation to what they are looking for.
    • Incorporate your relevant search phrases, but also create a compelling description to entice users to click.
    • The content of your Description must be relevant to your website.

    Keywords:

    Keywords: words or (groups of words) entered into search engines in order to get matching and relevant results.

    You can promote your site by adding up to 10 keywords with the SEO settings area. Keywords are words or short phrases that describe your website content and should include words that people may use to search for you. 

    You can make a list of keywords to focus on when you optimize your website. Try and imagine what users would type into Google, to find your type of product or service. Each “keyword” can be 1-4 words long.
    There are also several tools that can help you determine the best keywords for your particular website. Google’s Keyword Tool is free, while WordTracker requires pay. These tools take into account the popularity and competition of your keywords, so you’re not wasting time and effort competing for a keyword that is so popular you simply will not rank the highest for.

    Updating your Page Meta Tags

    With the new Wix HTML Editor, it’s possible to generate Meta Tags for each page of your website. Follow the same basic instructions as above, but make the content applicable to the specific page you are adding meta tags for.

    To Update the Page Meta Tags:

    1) Open the website editor
    2) To the left of the editor, click the Pages icon
    3) From the Pages options, select the page you wish to work on
    4) At the bottom of your Pages menu, click Settings and SEO
    5) As you did for the Site Meta Tags, update your Page Title, Page Description and add Keywords

    Repeat this process for each of your pages so that each has their own personalized meta tags.

  • Heading Tags

    H1 or Heading tag is quite literally the heading of your webpage, much like the heading of a newspaper article.

    When someone enters your website, they will naturally notice the Heading before reading the content on the page. Search engine crawlers function the same way. When a search engine crawls a webpage its first action is to attempt to understand what the page is about. It does this by first reading the Heading tags.

    Important points for writing your Heading:

    • Incorporate your relevant search phrases.
    • Make sure the Heading is relevant to the content on the webpage.
    • Your Heading should immediately allow the user to understand what your webpage is about and entice them to read more.

    You should only have one H1 Heading per webpage.

    There is no specific size requirement for H1 text. There are 3 factors that affect H1 status:

    1) Size of the title's font (bigger = more important)
    2) Position on the page (higher titles = more importance)
    3) Add Titles using Title Text boxes rather than regular text boxes

    To view the HTML website SEO version :

    1. Add "?_escaped_fragment_=" to the end of your websites domain name. Eg. www.mydomain.com/?_escaped_fragment_=

    2. Once you are viewing the ?_escaped_fragment_= version, right click to View Source Code.

    3. Once you're viewing the source of the SEO version, click CTRL + F, and type in "H1" to search for the H1 headers on your site.

     

    The following is a guide to help you manage the h1 for your HTML website:

    Title - H1
    Page Title- H2
    Heading XL - H3
    Heading L - H4
    Heading M - H5
    Heading S - H6

    The rest of the styles are mapped to paragraph tag.

    Here are some tips about H1 headers:

    1. A proper HTML page allows only one H1 tag. If you place an H1 tag in your header or footer or if you marked it to be displayed on all pages, then you shouldn't add anymore H1 tags.

    2. If you don't check the "show on all pages" option on your H1 text, you can add one line of text (in a paragraph or title) that has an H1 style.

    3. The H1 text should be a single line. if you break lines, the H1 tag will be added only to the top line. If you would like the H1 tag to spread over more than one line simply click on shift+enter instead of only enter.

    4. If any of your pages has more than one line of text with "title" style then Wix will mark the top left title as H1 and the rest will be H2.

     

    If you would like to view your new HTML website exactly as Google and other search engines see it, you cannot simply right click on the live site and select to view the source code - this is how it worked for the Wix Flash websites, but not for the HTML5 sites.

    To view the HTML website as Google does, simply add "?_escaped_fragment_=" to the end of your websites domain name. Eg. www.mydomain.com/?_escaped_fragment_=

    Once you are viewing the ?_escaped_fragment_= version of your website, you can right click to View Source Code, but this is only if you are interested in viewing the source code. Otherwise, seeing the ?_escaped_fragment_= version of your website is a nice way to see how Google is viewing your website.

    If you want to check that the correct H1 has been updated in the source code of your site, view the source of your site and follow the instructions to view the SEO version. Once you're viewing the SEO version, view the source of the page, click CTRL + F, and type in "H1" to search for the H1 headers on your site.

  • Content

    If you have already read Getting Started: SEO then you should already be ready and prepared for this section. But here are a few additional pointers.

    Text Quantity

    Text quantity is the number of words appearing on your webpage. The minimum recommended number of words on your homepage is 250. But too much content can also be counterproductive, try to keep it as less than 1500 words per page.

    Search engines first read your website’s Site Title and Description, then search engines read your text. This is why it’s so important to have original, relevant and quality content.

    There are several ways to improve text quantity:

    • Add a footer to your site's pages which contains relevant content.
    • Continue to edit and add new content on a regular basis. Google and other search engines love fresh content.
    • Add more text to existing pages.
    • Add new Pages into your website to add further content: Create a Page such as testimonials, about, our story...

    If you have too much text, consider removing the amount of text or the page itself.

    Text Quantity tips:

    • If the same content is being used in other websites, search engines would recognize this as duplicate content. Search engines will penalize your website for duplicate content. It is extremely important that all content is original, relevant and quality.
    • Search engines will also recognize spelling mistakes and typos which will cause your website to rank low.
    • Never hide text from the user in an attempt to reach the text quantity quota. If text is visible to search engines only it is considered spam. And may also result in the removal of your website from search engine indexes

    Anchor Text

    “The anchor text, link label or link text is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink”.

    Anchor text, sometimes referred to as clickable text, is helpful for boosting a website's search engine ranking.

    Instead of merely linking to pages within your website or outside websites using the URL or the words “click here”, use relevant keyword phrases.

    For example: a person who has a search engine optimization website might do well to use "SEO services" rather than something like "click here now“.

    Keyword Density

    Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or keyword phrase appears on your webpage compared to the total number of words on the webpage.

    In the context of SEO; search engines use keyword density as a factor in determining whether a webpage is relevant to a specified keyword or keyword phrase being searched.

    It is important for your main keywords to have the correct keyword density to rank well in Search Engines.

    Using your keywords too many times on your webpage may result in search engines labeling your webpage as spam.

    Not using your keywords enough times may result in search engines not ranking your webpage high enough in the search results.

    The recommended density for keywords within webpage text is 3%.

    This means that if your webpage contains 100 words, your keywords should appear no more than 3 times.

    One of the simplest ways to improve your website's placement in search engine results is to work on the keyword density of your Webpage.

  • Optimize your Images for Google Image Search

    Images added to your Wix website can be found by image search engines such as Google Image Search. This means that you can drive traffic to your site with your images!

    What are image names?

    • Providing names for your images is done using what is called Alt Text.
    • Alt Text provides users and search engines with information about your images. Search engine robots are unable to “read” images - only text. Alt Text provides information about your images to search engines.

    Which of Your Images Should Have Alt Text?

    • Images that add information or value to the user. Decorative images that are merely aesthetic and are not relevant to your site’s content, do not need Alt Texts.

    How to Add Alt Text to Your images?

    With Wix, it’s easy! Simply follow these steps:

    1) Within the website editor, click on your image gallery.
    2) From the gallery property panel, click Organize Images.
    3) From the Organize Images panel, select the image you want to update.
    4) Add a Title to the image. The title will be associated by search engines to your image and will help them understand it. The title will also be used as alt text.

    5) You can also add more general details about the image in the Description area. Search engines will associate the description with your image and can better index it.

    Note: The image title and description are the latest schema.org html standard and recommended by the major search engines.

  • Links

    Backlinks (also known as incoming links, inbound links and inward links) are links that point towards your website, from other relevant websites.

    Gaining backlinks to your website is an extremely important aspect of boosting your site’s rank in Google.

    Backlinks are like votes of confidence for your website; the more votes you have – from quality websites – the better your site appears to search engine crawlers.

    A single, quality link from a popular site is better than a large amount of poor quality links.

    How to Get Links to Your Wix Website

    Gaining links to your website is a challenging task. There is no simple way to express this. Gaining quality links to your website also happens to be the key in getting Google to find and index your site.

    4 Ways to Gain Links

    1. Submit Site URL to Directories

    Directories are like online libraries for websites. They are themselves websites that categorize and list other websites, based on many factors depending on the directory.

    Getting listed in a directory can boost your site’s visibility with a valuable backlink. DMoz is the web’s largest and most popular directory. Smaller, niche-based directories can be powerful as well. For instance, if your business is an art gallery, try searching the web for art-based directories.

    2. Submit Content to Article Databases

    Article databases like EzineArticles.com and Squidoo.com have loads of articles written on a variety of topics. Write a few quality articles relating to your website’s niche, and include some backlinks to your website. We suggest using Anchor Text (see below) when linking i.e. instead of merely linking using the URL or the words ‘click here’, use relevant keyword phrases. For example, a person who has a search engine optimization website might do well to use "SEO services" rather than something like "click here now.“

    3. Write and Release Press Releases

    Same concept as the article submissions, only the content must be announcing something news-worthy related to your website, or industry. A product release, a special event or promotion, a new partnership, etc. are all great fodder for press releases. Include backlinks to your website, again using ‘anchor text’ where possible. PRWeb and 24-7 Press Release are great PR sites to use. They cost money, but can lead to valuable links.

    4. Social Networking

    Getting involved in an online community related to your niche can lead to many link-building opportunities. Blogs, forums and social media sites are full of people interested in the same topics as you, looking to connect and form business relationships. Join as many of these groups as you can, and make yourself known as someone offering value to the community. Guest blogging and affiliate marketing are two great ways to gain back-links to your Wix website.

  • Social Networks

    Never underestimate the power of Social Networks. Not only is Social Networking a great way to increase awareness about your website, but linking back to your website from social networks is a fantastic way to boost your page rank.

    However, as with the content you put on your site, make sure your posts are relevant and hold value otherwise it can actually set you back in terms of SEO.

    With Wix, we offer several quick and easy ways to help your website socially.

    You can also add social network buttons and widgets to your website allowing visitors to interact with their respective social networks e.g. allowing a visitor to ‘like’ your website, thereby posting your website on their Facebook page.

    To add Social Icons to your website:

    1) From the left of the editor, click Add and then Social.
    2) Click to add the Social Icon you want.


    3) Some Social Icons, such as Twitter Follow Buttons, will require basic set-up – simply follow the steps within the buttons options panel.

  • Advanced SEO Settings: Header Code Meta Tags

    You can add header codes to the <head> section of your site for verification or authorship approval. Header code supported services include Google Webmaster toolsBing Webmaster ToolsTwitter CardsPinterest VerificationAlexa site owner claim, and more! 

    In order to proceed  with Pinterest verification, you will first need to connect your own domain to your Wix site which is a premium feature.

    To add header codes to the <head> section of your site:

    1. Click Settings and then click SEO (Google).
    2. Click Advanced SEO Settings.
    3. Under Header Code – Meta Tags, paste the code you received from the third party service.

    The code should follow this format: <meta name="google-site-verification" content="Your Code Here" />

    Do not add the following:

    •  Free text
    • Title, Description or Keywords Meta Tags
    • Google Analytics Code
    • Scripts (<script>)
    • Robots (<meta name="robots" ... >)

    4. Click Apply.

    Make sure to publish your site and complete the verification process with the third party service.  

    A header code is added to your site.
