With Wix, you can connect your domain to your Wix creation so that when visitors type in your domain they will automatically be taken to your site! You can connect your domain to our servers in one of two ways: by connecting your domain to Wix's name servers or by pointing your domain to Wix's IP. Below you will find step-by-step instructions on pointing your domain to Wix by IP. For information on connecting with name servers, click here.
You will have to purchase a domain from a domain registrar of your choice before you can connect it to your Wix site.
If you upgrade to the Combo, Unlimited or Ecommerce Yearly plan, you will receive a free domain for one year.
Please Note: Wix Does NOT Recommend Pointing
We recommend connecting your domain to Wix by using the Wix name servers.
Downtime when Wix IP changes: The primary reason that we recommend connecting your domain to Wix by using the Wix name servers is that the Wix IP address might change in order to prevent your site from going down. This happens from time to time when natural disasters, server problems and other problems occur. In such events, domains connected to Wix by name servers will automatically have their DNS records updated. However, domains that are connected to Wix by IP pointing will not work until you request the new IP# from us and then manually make the changes with your domain host. This will result in a much longer downtime.
Less support & assistance: When you connect your domain to Wix by name servers, we can offer support and assist you in creating any DNS records you might need. Whereas if you connect to Wix by pointing you would need to contact your domain host with any domain/DNS related issues.
Feature updates must be made manually: We can automatically modify your DNS to accommodate any new feature that requires DNS changes (like WixMobile, and any other possible features that we might release in the future). When choosing pointing you would need to manually make these changes with your domain host.
When pointing your domain to your Wix site, the domain name stays at your hosting company and points to the Wix servers. Your domain host remains in control of your domain records.
To connect your domain to your Wix site by pointing:
1. Purchase a domain from a domain hosting company.
2. From Wix.com, hover over Subscriptions and click Domains.
3. Under Domains, click Use a Domain You Already Own.
5. Click Connect your domain to Wix but keep your current registrar.
6. Under Setup with Wix, type your domain name in the field.
7. Select a site that you would like to connect your domain to and click Next.
8. Under Setup with registrar, select a registrar from the drop-down menu and click Done.
11. Follow the instructions to ask your domain host to point your domain to the IP in the box below:
In preparation for WixMobile, please also point m.yourdomain.com to the same IP.
