• Overview

When you sign up for a free Wix account, you can create and publish as many websites as you wish absolutely free. When you publish a free Wix site, it will automatically get its own site address (URL). The structure of a free Wix URL is: username.wix.com/sitename.

If you would like to connect your own domain (a domain is a site address that you own, for example: www.mydomain.com), you will first have to upgrade your account to a Premium package that includes using your own domain. You will also have to own a domain or register for one with a domain hosting company. Once you have upgraded your Wix account and have a domain, you can find instructions here to connect your domain to your Wix site.

For more information about our different packages, check out our page here.
If you already own a domain and have upgraded your Wix account, you can find complete information on connecting your domain here.

  • Connecting Your Own Domain to Your Wix Site

You can give your Wix site its own domain. To do so, you will first have to register your domain with a domain hosting company. You then have to upgrade your Wix account and finally, you will have to connect your domain to your Wix site.
You can find more information here to connect your domain to your Wix site.

  • Name Servers (DNS) vs Pointing

You can connect your domain to Wix in one of two ways: by pointing your domain to Wix's IP or by connecting to Wix's name servers. When pointing your domain to Wix’s IP, the domain name stays at your hosting company and points to the Wix servers. Your domain host remains in control of your domain records. When connecting your domain to your Wix site using name servers, the domain name stays at your hosting company but control of your domain records is transferred to Wix.
The recommended method for connecting your domain to Wix is by using our name servers. A major advantage of this is that you will be able to manage your domains and domain records in the Wix Domain Manager.

    Other advantages include:
Higher availability: Pointing by IP means pointing to the old Wix infrastructure. This infrastructure lacks a newly designed failover mechanism.
Better performance: Wix infrastructure is expanding to additional geographical locations. This includes an intelligent algorithm which serves user sites according to the end user location. This service will not be available for users that configured their domain by pointing to IP.
Automatic activation of new services: New services (Wix Mobile, for example) are automatically activated for users that manage their domain in the Wix Domain Manager. Users who have connected their domain by pointing will have to activate these new Wix services manually.

Can I connect more than one domain to the same Wix site?

Yes you can! In order to do so you will need to follow these steps below:

Step 1: Decide which domain address is your primary one (www.domain.com).  The other domain address (www.domain2.com) will be your secondary.
Step 2: Connect your primary domain to Wix.
Step 3: Once you have connected your primary domain to your Wix site, go to Manage Premium > click on the Domains tab > select your secondary domain from the list > Basic .

Next to ‘Wix Site’ click on ‘Change’.

In the pop-up window select ‘To another domain name’, select your primary domain from the drop down menu and click on ‘Save’.

Your domain name is now redirected! You will be able to see this under the Domain Summary.

Note: If your primary domain name is not connected to Wix correctly, the redirection will not work.
You will receive an error message. In this case, please make sure to follow the instructions in step 2.

Use the Domain Troubleshooter to make sure that you have connected your domain correctly.

I am getting an error that says that my domain is already taken. What do I do?

If you receive this error, it's one of two cases:

    • You have previously added the domain to your domain manager.

If this is the case, please follow these steps:
    1. From Manage Premium, click on the Domains tab.
    2. Click on the Domains and click Manage next to the domain.
    3. A new page will open > click on Change (next to Wix Site).
    4. Choose the document you want to use > click on Save.

    • The domain is already in a domain manager of another account.

If this is the case, and you have another Wix account, please delete the domain from the domain manager of your other account.
If you do not have another account, then please let us know the domain name and we will remove it for you (assuming that you are the owner of the domain).
