    Sub-domain problems

    Ticket by me | April 24, 2014 | Question
    • Hello,

I moved my domain over to Wix. My sub domains sites now are no longer loading.

I received this reply from my hosting company when I put in a support ticket:

These domains are not returning any DNS information:
      https://www.whatsmydns.net/#A/vipgroup.savaun.com
      https://www.whatsmydns.net/#A/extremeweightlosssecrets.savaun.com
Since you are using outside nameservers please check with your DNS
provider to ensure your custom A records are set up correctly.

      Please advise asap.

      Thanks,

      Nate

      Hey Nate,

You will need to add a CNAME or an A record in the Wix domain manager:

      1. From your Domain Manager, under My Domains (Advanced), next to your Wix domain, click Manage.
      2. Under Domain Summary, click Advanced.
      3. Next to DNS Records, click Manage.
      4. From Edit Domain Records next to CNAME (Aliases), click Add New CNAME Record.
      5. Next to Alias Name, type in the subdomain.
      6. Next to Points to Host Name, type in the domain that your subdomain should point to.
      7. Next to TTL, from the drop-down menu, select the time before this addition takes effect.
      8. Click Add.

Please let us know should you require any further assistance.

      Thanks,

      Alina, Wix Support Team

      Hi Alina,

Can you check my account to make sure I've done everything correctly. I followed your instructions, but my sites are still down. Please advise.

      Thanks,

      Nate

      Hey Nate,

Please note that you cannot have a sub-domain connected with a specific page in your Wix site - only with its homepage, or with a different root-level domain address.

Where are you trying to connect your sub-domains to?

      Thanks,

The sub-domains were already connect to two seperate sites. I have two sub-domains registered with Dreamhost (the hosting company is use) using savaun.com. One is domain is extremeweightlosssecrets.savaun.com and the other is vipgroup.savaun.com. Ever since I started using savaun.com as my url for my Wix site the two sub-domain urls do not work. The sites don't come up. How do I fix it?

      Hello,

Please not that you need to update your Cname correctly.

Please set the field "points to" to the Wix site you want the sub-domain to redirect to.

I think there ius a misunderstanding. I do not want the sub-domain urls to point to www,savaun.com (the wix site). The sub-domains have sites or did have sites of their own until I started using savaun.com as my wix site url.

Please I just want my other two sites: www.extremeweightlosssecrets.savaun.com and www.vipgroup.savaun.com back up and online.

In your instruction please be as specific as possible. Tell me exactly what I need to do and what I need to type into any field box in order to correct this issue.

If the sub-domains will not populate anymore because I'm using www.savaun.com as my wix site url let me know that too. If so, let me know if there's a way to change everything so that all three site urls are working as they once were.

      I'm getting frustrated :(

      Thanks

Again I contacted the hosting company I use and they sent me the following message:

Please contact your DNS provider for instructions on creating custom DNS
      records.
You can find the IP needed for the A record to host your domain here by
      visiting Manage Domains:
      https://panel.dreamhost.com/index.cgi?tree=domain.manage& and clicking on
      DNS under the domain name:

      dig vipgroup.savaun.com @ns1.dreamhost.com +short
      67.205.26.158

      [~] dig extremeweightlosssecrets.savaun.com @ns1.dreamhost.com +short
      67.205.26.158

      ###

According to them the reason the sub-domains are not working is because the sub-domains are not returning any DNS information:

      https://www.whatsmydns.net/#A/vipgroup.savaun.com
      https://www.whatsmydns.net/#A/extremeweightlosssecrets.savaun.com

In order for them to work again, since I'm now using outside nameservers, I need to check with Wix, my new www.savaun.com DNS provider to ensure my custom A records for the sub-domains (www.extremeweightlosssecrets.savaun.com & www.vipgroup.savaun.com) are set up correctly.

      Please advise.

      Hey,

In this case, if you would like to point your sub-domains to an IP address, you will need to update the A records (The A record maps a name an IP address, while the CNAME record maps a name to another name):

      1. From your Domain Manager, under My Domains (Advanced), next to your Wix domain, click Manage.
      2. Under Domain Summary, click Advanced.
      3. Next to DNS Records, click Manage.
      4. From Edit Domain Records next to A (Host), click Add New A Record.
      5. Next to Host Name, type in the subdomain.
      6. Next to Points to IP Address, type in the IP address that the subdomain should point to.
      7. Next to TTL, from the drop-down menu, select the time before this addition takes effect.
      8. Click Add.

I have updated them for you. It may take up to 72 hours for the changes to take effect.

      Thanks,
