    Transfering site while keeping links alive

    • Hi there,

      Im seriously considering transfering my site to WIX - it feels awesom

      I have one issue I can't find an answer to on your help site:

      How can I keep the original links from my old site?

      (http://naturopath.co.il/liver_protocall.html) I will need to transfer domain of course but then

      I see your system uses a different file name system.

      can it be bridged? I don't want to loose my google placements and links on many  online sites to pages on my web site.

      Hey Chen, 


      Unfortunately it is not possible to have a 'clean URL' at the moment. For a thorough and detailed explanation, please read below. 


      Your Wix HTML5 website is built using HTML5 and AJAX technology. This has many benefits, such as animations on your page transitions, the ability to have your background, header and footer stay static while only the content changes, the ability to use all of the new HTML features as they are released, dynamic page sizing, optimization for mobile devices, etc.

      To support using this technology, the URL's of your website need to be built in the following manner:

      1. This is your domain name
      2. #! - This is called a 'hashbang'. The # signifies a 'hash fragment' and is the convention being used today to link to content when using AJAX technology (similar to anchors in HTML). The ! specifies the escaped fragment, which is what allows search engines to understand where the content in your site is actually located – this is because the content you're seeing on your site is being rendered via AJAX technology which means that your page isn't 'reloading' – i.e., when you switch pages, your header, background and footer all stay in place. The content actually does exist on the server- but at another address. In order for the search engines to find this address, the ! is used as the 'escaped fragment', which tells the search engines where to find your content (as they cannot really crawl javascript properly).

      3. This is the name of the page you're on. After this, the symbol / is what we use as part of the mechanism described in point #2. This is where we specify the actual address of the page on the server
      4. This is the Page ID which is the actual address of the page on the server, and cannot currently be changed. This is necessary because it tells the browser (and search engines) where to fetch the content from.

      Important Note: In order to share links to your site you must use the full link above (1-4) including the Page ID. Removing the Page ID will yield an invalid link.

      I see. Thank you for the swift reply.

      What do other website owners do when they transfer regular html4 and earlier version of web sites to keep old links well located in google or links from other websites from getting lost in the transfer?

      HI Chen,


      If you transfer and connect domain, for the major part the links will direct to your new site, however links to specific pages on your old site might not, the best thing to do is to create the site and publicize website so your users know about the change.


      Google will index again once the new site is crawled.

      I will probasbly need better solutions since we're talking about a site 15 years up and well connected throughout the web. Most connections are not easily changable  and will thus be lost.

      Location in google will be fixed after a while but alot of traffic may well be lost if we cannot find a usefull solution.

      two related questions:

      1. if a link is not found does WIX show a error 404 or just send the person searching to my home page?

      2. Does WIX supply Email server services? My present service provider provides storage space for my site + Email hosting that enables my proffesional Email (domain name based)

      Please note, after connecting your domain to Wix, the old URL's may provide an error 404, when using them directly.


      Note that SEO is the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines using natural search results i.e. ensuring your website appears as high up on the list as possible, when searching using relevant keywords within search engines e.g. Google.


      At Wix, you can be sure that we are doing everything we can to make sure that your site is crawled by Google. While we at Wix are doing our part, there are many elements required from your side. To make your site searchable, please make sure to fill in your site's meta tags, and enable the 'Allow search engines to find my site' option:


      1. From the left toolbar, click the Settings icon.

      2. From the Settings list, click SEO.

      3. Checkmark the box next to Allow Search Engines to find my site then under Site Title, Site Description and Keywords, fill in the fields.

      4. Click Done.


      In addition, update each page's meta tags by small selecting the settings icon for each page, and filling out the relevant fields:

      1. From the left toolbar, click on the Pages icon.

      2. Next to each page, click on the small settings icon.

      3. Fill out the Page Title, Page Description, and Keywords under the SEO Page Settings section.


      Now your site will be able to appear in search engines. Please note that it may take 1-3 months for search engines to crawl and index your site. Please note that being indexed by search engines does not guarantee your site a high ranking, this depends on the work you put into SEO process.

      Regarding the emails, you can now purchase personalized emails from Google Apps directly from Wix. Click here for more information.

      Thank you for the SEO tips Dimitry. I will definately use them, once I found a way to trasfer my site with minimal or no loss to my internet presence.

      As for the mail - I have proffesional mail now that is a chen@mydomain.com style.

      I pull it off a webmail server hosted by the same company that hosts my web site.

      The question is can WIX offer similiar services?


      Another question came up (they keep piling up, don't they...?) 

      If I want one web site in Hebrew and another off topic site (not a translation) in English - can they both connect to the same domain? and how?

      Hey Chen,


      1) Please contact your email hosting company and ask them if there are MX records or any other records that need to be added in order to get your email up and running. If there are missing records, please add them to the Wix Domain Manager in your Wix account. If you are having trouble with updating your records, please forward us your host’s reply (with the records) and we will make the changes for you.


      In the Domain Manager, you can add MX records, A records, CNAME records and TXT records.

      Thank you Leah but Im not at that point yet - not going to transfer my domain till I know I worked out the kinks.

      My Question was does WIX support the option of bein the email port for my domain. Also I guess I would need to know the mailbox size alllocated. (How much mail can it hold between pulls) and if it has a direct read mail q reply and such options.

      As for the dual language option. From what I saw it is possible but I was unclear on one point. Does removing the tab bar remove the static header that does not reload? If I want the English site to look totally different can it be done like that?

      Hi Chen,


      What Leah explained is that you can keep your old email address and host and simply connect it to Wix using MX records, the change will be invisible to you once you add the records and you will be able to use your email just like before (you will still need to pay your current mail host though).

      If you would like to purchase an email box from Wix that is also possible and you can read how to do so here.


      Regarding the links you previously had, maybe you can redirect them to your new site or place a banner that says that "this page doesn't exist anymore but you can find us in our new location here (and put a link)".

      Regarding the multi-lingual site, if these are two completely different sites that are not associated with one another I do not recommend that you create them on the same site but you can do so (since you are creating a button menu - as explained in the video, you can actually make two different menus, one for each site, and they will not interfere with one another.

      Oh and I can see my background as well.

      Another point - I have the site opened already on another screen . Here I can switch pages no problem and see the whole site.

      I tried opening on another computer - same issue as above.

      Thank you for the swift response time. My I ask what was the reason for this downtime?

      Another question:

      I can sign in member to the site. Appart from the use in shopping cart senario - can I use this option

      to create a member only zone on my site? Any other use?

      Hey Chen,


      You can add a member login button to your site so that your visitors can sign up or login to your site and access your members-only pages.


      To add a member login button to your site:


      1. From the left side of the Editor, click the Add icon.
      2. From Add, click Apps.
      3. From Apps, click Member Login Button.
      4. Drag the Member Login Button into place.


      From Settings, you can click "Show on all pages" to add this button to all of your site's pages.


      A member login button is added to your site.


      To set which of your pages are members-only and for more information about members-only pages, click here.
