There are two ways to create an image with a transparent background:

1. Starting from scratch:

Within Photoshop, click File > New > In the Background Contents field, choose Transparent

You are free to design whatever elements you require (text, shapes, lines, etc) and they will appear with a transparent background.

When you're done,  Save for Web as a .png file.

2. Existing Image

Within Photoshop, select the part of the image that you want > copy and paste it into a new page in Photoshop > double click on the background to edit the name > change the opacity to 0%.

After you've done this, you should see a checkered box for the background. Click on Save for Web and make sure to save it as a .png file.

Finally, upload it to your Wix editor!

Please also make sure that the image has no skin. Click the image -> Change Style > Edit Style -> choose the first skin called No Skin Photo.

    Hello,

Please what is the right dimension for background images?

      Hi nwanzevince,

The images can be any size (within our recommended 15mb recommendation). Once you upload the background image you may then select the image scaling and position.  Your site visitors will view your site using different devices and various screen resolutions therefore an exact size is not given by us but rather instructions on how to scale the image to best fit your site.

Please let us know if you have any further questions we may assist you with.

      All the best, Ellie

I downloaded my images from the Internet and they are saved as .png files with transparent backgrounds. I have GIMP installed on my computer and I've opened the images in GIMP to confirm that the backgrounds are transparent. However, when I try to add them to my Wix site they show up with a white background. I can't find the "Save for web" or "No skin" options in GIMP; would these help and where could I find them? Any other suggestions?

I PS'ed my images to have transparent background with a drop shadow, which in theory should provide a drop shadow against any background color. I've done this frequently when I used to code web page HTML by hand. Apparently the Wix "team" never thought of this possibility (I used to do it all the time) and the effect (which should work) comes out wrong. I hate this when the design app 2nd guesses what you want, and guesses wrong, and there seems to be no way around it, except to not be able to do the effect that you wanted (and used to work with regular web page design.) Sigh!!!

I mean, a key purpose of using a image format with alpha/transparency (like PNG) is to be able to do things like blending a drop shadow with any background color.

When I'm wrong, I admit it. I am wrong on this. When I did the first images, I saved them as PNG-8. When I re-saved them as PNG-24 they worked correctly, just as I wanted them to. The drop shadow intergrated with the background color just as it should.

Sorry for short temper on this.

      Thank you

Hello, my image is transparent already it's been edited in photoshop and shows up with the background transparent everywhere except when I apply it to my wix page. When I apply the image to my webpage in wix, it has a black background framing it.

    Any suggestions?

      Hi,

As you can see on the Best Reply at the top of this page, you must use one of the image applications you have mentioned:

      Have a great day,

Unfortunately Paint may not be enough. The image file must be saved correctly in the format to support a transparent background. It is true that Photoshop is not the only option but you do need some kind of graphics program in order to save correctly.

I'm having the same problem as these guys, and I can't afford to get photoshop - have just tried to download the appropriate version of GIMP several times but it either says it's encountered and error, or can't connect to the server - is GIMP reliable and would you recommend them?

I don't want to download anything that's dodgy...

    Thanks

      Hi Kylie,

Yes we do recommend GIMP, however we cannot support the installation of it on your computer.

Thanks Natty, I've managed to install GIMP and followed the instructions regarding transparency. The logo image once I upload to my homepage through wix editor is very rough and messy looking, although I have managed to make the background transparent. Any ideas? I've uploaded it to my original site, NOT the copy of my site, so you can have a look at it and see if there is anything further you can suggest I do.

      thanks so much

      Hi Kylie,

I apologize for the inconvenience. I was unable to locate the image on your site - please let us know what image you are referring to.

Please note that you can also use one of the many online photo editors out there. I personally like this one, but most editors will do.

      1. Create a new image. Make sure to check the "Transparent" box before creating it.

      2. Open your original image on the same editor (click File > Open image).

      3. Select the part of the image you wish to display, and click Ctrl+C to copy it.

      4. Go to your new transparent image, then click Ctrl+V to paste your image.

      5. Save the image as PNG to your computer, then upload it to Wix following the steps in the Best Reply at the top of this thread.

Should you require any further assistance, don't hesitate to contact us again!

    Adding a logo

Hi I am having trouble with my logo. I want to put it up the top where the background is blue but I want the logo to blend in so the colour fill isn't white. I have tried editing it using Wix Editor and Word but the background is still white. I just want a clear back drop on the logo to put it up with the blue and have it blend nicely
