Subdomains are used to connect the same domain to resources on two different servers. For example, if you have a domain - www.domainexample.com - pointed to your Wix site, you may also want to create a subdomain - blog.yourdomain.com - which would point to where your blog is hosted.

To add a subdomain: Sign in to your Wix account > from the menu at the top, hover over Subscriptions > click Domains > click Use a Domain You Already Own > click Connect your domain to Wix but keep your current registrar.

Under Connecting your own domain, fill in the subdomain information, select the relevant site and select your registrar  > click Next.

Once you have added the subdomain to your account, you will need to add the following DNS records for the primary domain.

A (Host) record for examplesubdomain.mydomain.com

CNAME (Aliases) record www.examplesubdomain.mydomain.com

CNAME (Aliases) record for m.examplesubdomain.mydomain.com

To add DNS records: Under My Domains, next to the relevant domain, click Manage.

Under Domain Summary, select the Advanced tab > next to DNS Records, click Manage > add or edit your records according to your requirements.

For detailed information on connecting a subdomain, click here.

I have a website domain that I must point (was going to point) with a subdomain to my WIX site.  I have customers with storage attached to the domain which is why I am forced to use this approach. I learned that I am unable to point using the subdomain because WIX forces the www. to be added to the front of my subdomain. In order to work around this issue, we had to create an iframe (imap). I was told that WIX cannot alter the parameter of adding the www to the front of my domain. Why can WIX not alter this parameter? When will this option be available? www.jamadots.com

      Hi jamadots,

      Thanks for contacting Wix support.

Unfortunately this is currently not possible due to the way the  Wix domain connection is setup.

This will only be changed if we alter the whole domain connection configuration in Wix.

We'll be happy to further assist if you require more help

    Hi,

I've connected my Wix site to a subdomain registered with DreamHost. When I put the url (2015.worldiaday.org) into my browser, I get an extra www and the page is not found. I spoke with DH about it and they said it was something on the Wix end that was incorrect.

I've followed the instructions above very carefully and set up the DNS records as suggested.

Do you have any idea what might be going wrong?

    Thanks/

      Hi Amit,

Where (Wix or DreamHost or both) should I add the CNAME? What should it be called? This is what I'm currently using:

      Hello moorecassan,
      Not moorecassan? Click here
To connect your domain to Wix, setup your DNS records as follows:

For yourdomain.com, create an A record that points to: 23.236.62.147

For www.yourdomain.com, create a Cname record that points to: www84.wixdns.net

For m.yourdomain.com, create a Cname record that points to: www84.wixdns.net

      Thanks,

I am sorry you are experiencing difficulties. I can see that you have properly added the A records in the domain manager.

      Hello,

Please follow the instructions in the Best Reply above to first connect your subdomains to Wix, then add them as CNAMEs to your domain.

At the moment they are not connected to Wix and not inserted in your CNAME list.

Feel free to let us know in case the issue persists.

Is it possible to have another wix site as subdomain?

Hello. I have a premium website called Forxlabs. We have a part of that website on another wix site. Forxlabs in premium the other is not! Is it possible to use the other as a subdomain, because essentially its a part of that premium website, but we wanted a different look so we had to make it into a separate site, although part of the same product we are selling.

      Hello,

Unfortunately, it isn't currently possible to update your site's pages' URLs (addresses). You can use a service such as bit.ly as an alternative.

Your Wix HTML5 website is built using HTML5 and AJAX technology. This has many benefits, such as animations on your page transitions, the ability to have your background, header and footer stay static while only the content changes, the ability to use all of the new HTML features as they are released, dynamic page sizing, optimization for mobile devices, etc.

To support using this technology, the URL's of your website need to be built in the following manner:

      1. This is your domain name

      2. #! - This is called a 'hashbang'. The # signifies a 'hash fragment' and is the convention being used today to link to content when using AJAX technology (similar to anchors in HTML). The ! specifies the escaped fragment, which is what allows search engines to understand where the content in your site is actually located – this is because the content you're seeing on your site is being rendered via AJAX technology which means that your page isn't 'reloading' – i.e., when you switch pages, your header, background and footer all stay in place. The content actually does exist on the server- but at another address. In order for the search engines to find this address, the ! is used as the 'escaped fragment', which tells the search engines where to find your content (as they cannot really crawl javascript properly).

You can learn more about AJAX technology  here.

      3. This is the name of the page you're on. After this, the symbol / is what we use as part of the mechanism described in point #2. This is where we specify the actual address of the page on the server

      4. This is the Page ID which is the actual address of the page on the server, and cannot currently be changed. This is necessary because it tells the browser (and search engines) where to fetch the content from.

Important Note: In order to share links to your site you must use the full link above (1-4) including the Page ID. Removing the Page ID will yield an invalid link.

For more information, visit our Learning Center page here.

Tip: Please note that if you feel that the URL is too long, you can use the Google URL shortener. Simply add your long URL- including the page #! and the page name, click "Shorten URL" and you will see on the right side the Google URL you can also use. It will look like this: http://goo.gl/ShONge .

Let us know if you need any additional help - we'll be happy to further assist!
