Your Wix HTML5 website is built using HTML5 and AJAX technology. This has many benefits, such as animations on your page transitions, the ability to have your background, header and footer stay static while only the content changes, the ability to use all of the new HTML features as they are released, dynamic page sizing, optimization for mobile devices, etc.

To support using this technology, the URL's of your website need to be built in the following manner:

1. This is your domain name

2. #! - This is called a 'hashbang'. The # signifies a 'hash fragment' and is the convention being used today to link to content when using AJAX technology (similar to anchors in HTML). The ! specifies the escaped fragment, which is what allows search engines to understand where the content in your site is actually located – this is because the content you're seeing on your site is being rendered via AJAX technology which means that your page isn't 'reloading' – i.e., when you switch pages, your header, background and footer all stay in place. The content actually does exist on the server- but at another address. In order for the search engines to find this address, the ! is used as the 'escaped fragment', which tells the search engines where to find your content (as they cannot really crawl javascript properly).

You can learn more about AJAX technology  here.

3. This is the name of the page you're on. After this, the symbol / is what we use as part of the mechanism described in point #2. This is where we specify the actual address of the page on the server

4. This is the Page ID which is the actual address of the page on the server, and cannot currently be changed. This is necessary because it tells the browser (and search engines) where to fetch the content from.

Important Note: In order to share links to your site you must use the full link above (1-4) including the Page ID. Removing the Page ID will yield an invalid link.

For more information, visit our Learning Center page here.

Tip: Please note that if you feel that the URL is too long, you can use the Google URL shortener. Simply add your long URL- including the page #! and the page name, click "Shorten URL" and you will see on the right side the Google URL you can also use. It will look like this: http://goo.gl/ShONge .

Is WIX discussing how to resolve this problem? There are over 500 complaints and my guess is every single user hates this. You would think it is common sense for a company to listen to their customers on such an obvious issue.

change page address from "url.com/#!example392" to "url.com/example"

I put "Concierge" in the page address section, but it still adds a bunch of other characters that I obviously do not want.

Please advise on how to remove the extra characters.

    Subpage URLs include gibberish

Hi, I have a premium account and utilize my own domain name.  I found that on the live site, when I click my subpages using tabs or links, some characters get added .  For example, the contact page should be: www.ctsmile.com/contact, but instead shows up as www.ctsmile.com/#!contact/c1gzt.  It indexes this way on search engines as well.

Furthermore, when I manually type in the URL as I want it to be for the subpages (ex: http://www.ctsmile.com/contact), it lands on my homepage instead of the subpage.

How do i remove additional characters from address

Hi - on the Wix website (created with Wix) the address appears in the format www.wix.com/about/contact-us without an additional characters such as /#!services/ch6q. As both the Wix website and my own website are both created in Wix, would it be possible for the address in my own website to have the additional characters removed as Wix has proven to the user that there is the possibility of doing this (it's probably just a tiny bit of code that needs adding)?

I believe that this would add a great deal of value to the Wix business.

    Thankyou.

    Remove Deep Linking

Please at least try to found a workaround this. This is one of the worst things to come out of Wix. And I understand it's purpose, but their has to be a workaround. I'll be really happy if you can get rid of the messiness. You haven't done anything about it in a long while, so just listen to us. A lot of users hate this.

      Hi,

To understand structure of your URL please see  Does Wix support deep linking?

We are using Ajax Crawling as a way for the search engines to read your websites code. With Ajax Crawling, your content, data and design are merged together and extracted far easier and quicker by search engines.

Using Ajax Crawling however means that accessing your source code is a little different.
If you access the source code the usual way (right clicking and view source), you will not see your websites content but rather a code, <meta name="fragment" content="!">, to tell search engines that we are using Ajax Crawling.

If you wish to view your website source code, use the below examples of where to place '?_escaped_fragment_=' within your domain name in order to access the escaped fragment version of your website. Once you are viewing the escaped fragment version of your website, you may right click and select 'View Source Code' in order to access your websites source code.

      Example site - www.wixexample.com
      1. Home Page - place ?_escaped_fragment_= at the end of your URL
      www.wixexample.com/?_escaped_fragment_=

      Example site - www.wixexample.com#!AboutUs/c2414
      2. Individual pages - ?_escaped_fragment_= in place of the #!
      www.wixexample.com/?_escaped_fragment_=AboutUs/c2414

We can assure you that your individual pages are seen by Google.

For more information about Ajax Crawling click here.

We are here should you have any further questions.

      Many thanks, Barrios

I have developed a website with wix with 2 pages. But it seems like both pages is under the same web page address www.gourmetconcepts.com.hk. May I know how I can set the sub page with a different address so that I can share out my sub page address and people can directly go to the specific page with the dedicated address. Thanks!

      Hi cal675,

      Thank you for contacting Wix.

I’ve noticed that you’ve embedded your site. Wix does not offer support for users who embed Wix material into external sites.
In order to receive proper support we ask you to correctly connect your domain to the Wix servers as this would guarantee the integrity of your site’s design and layout.

In addition, please bear in mind that Google Analytics and search engine crawlers can only work properly with your site when your domain is correctly connected to our servers.

For more information on connecting your domain to your Wix site, check out our help page.

      Ron, Wix Team
