Subdomains are used to connect the same domain to resources on two different servers. For example, if you have a domain - www.domainexample.com - pointed to your Wix site, you may also want to create a subdomain - blog.yourdomain.com - which would point to where your blog is hosted.

To add a subdomain: Sign in to your Wix account > from the menu at the top, hover over Subscriptions > click Domains > click Use a Domain You Already Own > click Connect your domain to Wix but keep your current registrar.

Under Connecting your own domain, fill in the subdomain information, select the relevant site and select your registrar  > click Next.

Once you have added the subdomain to your account, you will need to add the following DNS records for the primary domain.

A (Host) record for examplesubdomain.mydomain.com

CNAME (Aliases) record www.examplesubdomain.mydomain.com

CNAME (Aliases) record for m.examplesubdomain.mydomain.com

To add DNS records: Under My Domains, next to the relevant domain, click Manage.

Under Domain Summary, select the Advanced tab > next to DNS Records, click Manage > add or edit your records according to your requirements.

For detailed information on connecting a subdomain, click here.

Is it possible to have another wix site as subdomain?

Hello. I have a premium website called Forxlabs. We have a part of that website on another wix site. Forxlabs in premium the other is not! Is it possible to use the other as a subdomain, because essentially its a part of that premium website, but we wanted a different look so we had to make it into a separate site, although part of the same product we are selling.

I would like to be able to provide a simple url on printed material.  I have a page on my wix site with information for sponsors.  I wanted use the url "sponsor.battleleague.com".  However, the field in the cname window will not except the url http://www.battleleague.com/#!sponsor/c211o.  Is there a way to point people to this page without such a complication url?

      Hello,

Unfortunately, it isn't currently possible to update your site's pages' URLs (addresses). You can use a service such as bit.ly as an alternative.

Your Wix HTML5 website is built using HTML5 and AJAX technology. This has many benefits, such as animations on your page transitions, the ability to have your background, header and footer stay static while only the content changes, the ability to use all of the new HTML features as they are released, dynamic page sizing, optimization for mobile devices, etc.

To support using this technology, the URL's of your website need to be built in the following manner:

      1. This is your domain name

      2. #! - This is called a 'hashbang'. The # signifies a 'hash fragment' and is the convention being used today to link to content when using AJAX technology (similar to anchors in HTML). The ! specifies the escaped fragment, which is what allows search engines to understand where the content in your site is actually located – this is because the content you're seeing on your site is being rendered via AJAX technology which means that your page isn't 'reloading' – i.e., when you switch pages, your header, background and footer all stay in place. The content actually does exist on the server- but at another address. In order for the search engines to find this address, the ! is used as the 'escaped fragment', which tells the search engines where to find your content (as they cannot really crawl javascript properly).

You can learn more about AJAX technology  here.

      3. This is the name of the page you're on. After this, the symbol / is what we use as part of the mechanism described in point #2. This is where we specify the actual address of the page on the server

      4. This is the Page ID which is the actual address of the page on the server, and cannot currently be changed. This is necessary because it tells the browser (and search engines) where to fetch the content from.

Important Note: In order to share links to your site you must use the full link above (1-4) including the Page ID. Removing the Page ID will yield an invalid link.

For more information, visit our Learning Center page here.

Tip: Please note that if you feel that the URL is too long, you can use the Google URL shortener. Simply add your long URL- including the page #! and the page name, click "Shorten URL" and you will see on the right side the Google URL you can also use. It will look like this: http://goo.gl/ShONge .

Hi Nitzan, Thanks for your help, but here is the step by step solution :

For the future- for those with this problem *

The answer is you need to  point your subdomain to your previous host- to do this:

    Click Manage Domain

    Clicked Advanced

Where it says DNS records click manage

Click add a new A record

Then type in your subdomain for example blog.website.com

and point it to your original ip address (some numbers 11.11111.111 for example) This IP address is where it was previously hosted)

Click OK! and wait up to 48 hours. That's it!

Good luck to those with this issue!

The issue is you upgraded to WIX, have your nameservers with wix, but subdomains (such as your blog) hosted previously at somewhere else.

    shop.thedousedshop.com is my subdomain

I have a domain that I purchased through Godaddy it's name is thedousedshop.com. I just created a wix webpage and connected this site to thedousedshop.com and everything is fine. I also have a webstore from Lightspeed with the subdomain of shop.thedousedshop.com. I created links from thedousedshop.com, that when clicked, would route you to my webstore - shop.thedousedshop.com, however, these links are no longer working and I keep getting an error message. These links need to be active and i was not encountering this problem until I published and transferred my wix site to my domain I already owned and purchased through godaddy. Why when I connected my wix site did my subdomain go down and now is not there? I contacted lightspeed and they said the sight is active but I need to contact wix to see why it is not linking. thank you.

    Can't access subdomain blog.website.com

Hi I updated our site to wix premium and changed our name servers to wix. We can see our website fine, however our blog, which was previously hosted and could be accessed at blog.website.com is now inaccessible.

I would like only links to website.com to be accessed through wix, but all other traffic, such as signin.website.com or blog.website.com (subdomains) be accessible.

    Can you help us out?

    Thank you in advance!

      Hi Fred,

The issue you're experiencing is occurring due to the fact that your site hasn't been published yet. In order to be able to connect your domain to your site, you must first publish the site.

Please go to your editor and click 'Publish' (the publish button is located right next to 'save' in the top right corner of the editor). After publishing, you should be able to connect your domain properly.

Feel free to contact us again for any assistance you may require!

Can't point my subdomain to Wix

I had tried to figure out this question for a day, but it still failed. Please help me to make my site work. I had a domain on GoDaddy, "www.abcde.net". I want to create two sub domain, "officialsite.abcde.net" and "site.abcde.net", and point them to my wix site. I follow the step in this tutorial

    GoDaddy Setting:

    1. Under my domain "abcde", I add an A records "officialsite" and point it to 23.236.62.147.

    2. I also try to add a CName record "site" and pint it to www243.wixdns.net.

    3. It's all the setting on GoDaddy.

    Wix Setting:

    1. Under my Premium account, click "Connect Domain".

    2. In the following page, click "Use a Domain You Already Own".

    3. In the follwing page, click "Connect your domain to Wix but keep your current registrar".

    4. Now we are in the setting page. I set my domain name "www.officialsite.abcde.net" and click the check box below to confirm I want to use pointing method.

    5. After I click "Next" button, the error message pop out "We were unable to locate the Name Servers that manage this domain. Please contact your registrar directly to verify the domain setup is correct.".
Same result if I put my another sub domain "www.site.abcde.net".

Please help me to figure out why can't this setting work, thanks.
