DNS is the management of your domain – i.e. you use it anytime you point your domain to an IP address, redirect emails to your email host or connect different subdomains to different servers.

Pointing your domain to the Wix IP means that your domain host retains control of your DNS and simply points your domain to the Wix servers.

The difference between pointing to the Wix IP or connecting with name servers is really a difference in who has control over your DNS – Wix or your domain host.

Please Note: Wix does NOT Recommend Pointing
Instead we recommend connecting your domain to Wix using Wix name servers.
Why?

Down time when Wix IP changes:
The primary reason we recommend connecting your domain to Wix using Wix name servers is that the Wix IP address might change in order to prevent your site from going down. This happens from time to time when natural disasters, server problem and other problems occur.
In such events, domains connected to Wix by name servers will automatically have their DNS records updated. However, domains that are connected to Wix by IP pointing will not work until you request the new IP# from us and then manually make the changes with your domain host. This will result in a much longer down time.

Less support & assistance: When you connect your domain to Wix by nameservers, we can offer support and assist you in creating any DNS records you might need. Whereas if you connect to Wix by pointing you would need to contact your domain host with any domain/DNS related issues.

Feature updates must be made manually: We can automatically modify your DNS to accommodate any new feature that requires DNS changes (like WixMobile, and any other possible features that we might release in the future). When choosing pointing you would need to manually make these changes with your domain host.

      Hi,

Your domain: dreamscapecars.com, pointing configuration in your registrar (not Wix, but your actual domain host) is incorrect.
To fix this, please follow the instructions here

    Hi,

It is the other way around: When you connect to us via DNS you have to set the MX records.

If you point to us via IP, the domain records are controlled by your domain host.

In order to see the IP address you need to point your domain name to and read the specific instructions on how to point your domain name please go here.

I did do that and I ran into problems with our emails (which we use at Superb.net servers).

If I point our dns to wix, how can I do that and continue using our emails thru Superb? We have many email users and I'm trying to avoid having to reconfigure everyones pop and smtp.

      Hello Ritti,

      So, please confirm the following...

      1. I set up with the registrar (go daddy) your DNS for shapehouse.com

      2. Wix is ready to go so that shapehouse.com will perfectly mirror shapehousela.com

      3. I set up MX records on Wix to what??? Presently I'm using mail.shapehouse.com, mail.shapehousela.com, smtp.shapehousela.com smtp.shapehouse.com and I DO NOT want to change that due to the numbers users.

      Hi,

Please note that shapehousela.com is connected via DNS and shapehouse.com via pointing.

That means that that they do not operate the same way.

The domain with the DNS will be operated via WIX when it comes to its records (mail etc..) the other domains records are under the control of your domain host.

We suggest sticking to one method so you can manage your mail properly.

Should you wish to use your registrar's name servers, you can connect your Wix site to your domain via 'pointing' instead of DNS.

An answer to this topic can be found in Can I switch from the DNS option to the Pointing option?

    Hello,

Will you please read below. It is from a Tier 2 Technical Support at Superb.net

Specifically what needs to be done to keep our mail at superb but shapehouse.com (at superb) point successfully to ShapeHousela.com (at Wix). Please do not send me to a wix faq page.

    ......

I am left scratching my head as to what it is you are trying to do. If I ready this right, you want to have an alias domain. Shapehouse.com which is currently pointed to our DNS servers (NS1.superb.net, NS2.superb.net) with an A record currently pointed to 209.61.236.9.
Shapehousela.com is currently pointed to other DNS servers (NS1.WIX.COM, NS2.WIX.COM) with an A record currently pointed to 23.236.62.147.
You previously mentioned that you wanted the A record for the domain pointed to 216.185.152.148
Quite frankly, a 301 redirect from Shapehouse.com using .htaccess should fix this. Otherwise I would change the NS of Shapehouse.com to point to WIX and let them take care of the name servers as they have with the other domains.

Your phone support gave me incorrect instructions...

    Account #30293915

Your phone support gave me incorrect information regarding pointing a domain at a different server to a domain at Wix. The domain at Wix is www.shapehousela.com. The external domain is www.shapehouse.com  Until recently I had shapehouse.com point to shapehousela.com and is worked seamlessly. Then shapehouse began coming up as a Wix ad page (see for yourself). I called to get directions on how to resolve this and have it point to shapehousela.com successfully. I was told, initially, to set your dns into my registrar. This worked, however, as my email accounts reside elsewhere, those accounts stopped working. I call back and was told another way to achieve my goal, without the email issue, was to point to the IP: 216.185.152.148.

After propagation, the site came up with Server Not Found. I've reset the external server to point back to shapehousela.com

I CALL WIX TWICE TO CONFIRM THAT THE IP SOLUTION WOULD WORK AND WAS TOLD TWICE THAT IT WOULD. DUE TO YOUR INCORRECT INFORMATION, OUR SITE WAS DOWN FOR HOURS.

לא הבנתי את ההבדל בין POINTING ל DNS.

Is it possible to do pointing but with cname instead of IP? (I only host one site on WIX)

This should solve the downtime and other problems, as you could change the domain I point to in the same way you would change the domain I purchased...

      Hey,

It may take up to 72 hours for changes to take effect (propagate).

Here you can find your current NS records and also check if they have been updated.

Please let us know should you require any further assistance.
