• Providing names for your images is done using what is called Alt Text.

• Alt Text provides users and search engines with information about your images. Search engine robot are unable to "read" images - only text. Alt Text behind provides information about your images to search engines.

Which of Your Images Should Have Alt Text?

1. Images that add information or value to the user. Decorative images that are merely aesthetic and are not relevant to your site’s content, do not need Alt Texts.

2. Linked images. Add Alt Text to a linked image with the name of the page it links to.

3. Images containing words. Add Alt Text to these images with the words from the image.

4. Charts, maps and diagrams. The Alt Text should focus merely on the information presented by these images. The color or size of these items don’t need to be included in your Alt Text.

Is there a way to add Alt Text to gallery images? I want to add text for SEO but do not want this to show up as the picture description. Is this possible? Thanks!

The text in the 'Title' field of your Gallery Images will function as the Alt Text. Google will also consider the Image Description.

Remember, whenever you update your website (and make sure you save your file afterwards) your website needs to be crawled again by the search engine, such as Google,  before you can expect to see these changes reflected on search results.

It can take anywhere from 1 to 3 months for Google to update its database and for your site to be re-indexed with your updates.

To speed the process you can re- submit, if you haven’t already, your website directly to Google through here.

As well as adding at least 1 more quality ‘backlink’ to your website. Sites with only a few backlinks, or no backlinks at all, will not be crawled often, and it will take longer for Google to refresh its cache of these sites.  To keep track of how many backlinks you have go here.

     firelissa,

I think the 2 images the seo wizard found are the twitter and facebook icons. You should not worry because of these images. However, since it confuses our users we will take those icons off the report.

Only titles are converted to Alt text - which is what google uses to understand the content of the image uploaded to your website. Google reads all of the content of your website, but I would not recomend relying on Alt text more than content text when it comes to optimizing your website.

Thanks for all of your help. With the image title and description that I type in, does Google rank image text lower than it does paragraph text? I had 6 product images on a page separately with the names for each, but have combined these into a slide show with the name and description. Have I hurt my SEO?

    Hi Tlthimm,

The SEO Monitoring tool is only analyzing your first Master Page. This is designed this way since most have only 1 master page and also because the home page is the most important page. If you would like to see what Google is scanning for you 'Telescoper' page then you can do  the following:

    1. Create a copy of the original site.
    2. Make the 'telescoper' master page as the default master page.
    3. Analyze and optimize the 'telescoper' master page.
    4. Follow this process for any other master page.
    5. Once completed, set the original default master page and connect your domain to the optimized copy.

I also want to mention that Google scans 'Telescoper' and 'Telescoper® ' as two different words, so to optimize that page, I recommend choosing one based on what others will search . Then, stick with it throughout the whole page/site.

I have started rewriting the home page - thank you. In regards to the images - when I use the SEO monitoring tool it reports that I have only 15 images. I have many more than that throughout all the pages. Why is there a discrepancy?

    Hi Tlthimm,

I forwarded this issue that occurs within our SEO Monitoring tool.

Please note that ultimately, the goal is to appease Google, and in order to do so, along with alt text for your images, you will need to make sure that your H1 header is optimized. The header should include the name of your company and contain more relevant text (rather than a catchphrase).

Also, the text on your homepage (and throughout your entire site) should contain your keywords in a very organic way. Make sure to have them show up a few times on your home page (without listing them. I strongly recommend taking a look at the information we offer about how to optimize your SEO here

I typed in Telescoper - the tool reports it only being listed 2 times in images, but I used that term more than two times on images found on my master pages.
