Summit Dub Squad is a 5-piece band from Flagstaff, Irie-Zona, that brings their High Elevation Sound Flavor and good vibes everywhere they go. SDS stands for human rights and environmental justice in a time of insane corporate greed, utilizing roots reggae and positive hiphop music as the channel to chant down babylon!

SUMMIT DUB SQUAD brings together a musically and culturally diverse group of individuals who share a common love for positivity, diversity and unity. Summit Dub Squad mixes and mashes Reggae, Hip Hop, Funk, Punk and Folk into a danceable and very listenable genre they classify as High Elevation Sound Flavor. Flagstaff, AZ is the home of the band and the air up there at 7,000 feet is crucial to their elevated stylings - "the city too hot, I-Man gonna cool out, up on the mountain top!" This sky island situated in the Four Corners region of the Southwestern US is bound by unparalleled beauty and high desert culture, both of which make their way into the Summit Dub sound.

Band History

Summit Dub Squad is ever-evolving and constantly growing. What began as an offshoot of Flagstaff hiphop mainstay GreenHouse Fresh Produce, SDS is now it's own entity with a very unique sound they've dubbed High Elevation Sound Flavor. When a house fire destroyed the GreenHouse Fresh Produce studio (and home to SOE, Paul & B Dub) in the winter of 2005, and as GFP MCs Train & Arek moved away, the fellas felt a new project was in order. Shortly after relocating to Summit Avenue, Summit Dub Squad was born. B Dub had begun learning to play guitar and dj SOE was programming beats. Dub Docta Paul bought a bass guitar and started laying some low-end depth to the scenario. With a foundation in positive hiphop deeply rooted, the Squad began incorporating the reggae vibes to their sound. Turns out their beloved hophop music actually has early roots in reggae and dub, and the crew has set out to rekindle that relationship.For their first official show, on August 18th 2005, the 3-man crew was invited to open up for reggae legend Joseph Hill and suergroup Culture at the historic Orpheum Theater in Flagstaff - the vibe was high and the Summit Dub sound was unleashed unto the world.Around 2006 the crew began inviting drummers into the mix, and when big Ben Keller came along, SOE was ready and willing to retire the drum machine loops in favor of solid, rock steady, live beats. That changed everything - the energy was building.Shows became frequent in Flagstaff, and have been ever since.In 2007 Hunter E. RedDay, fresh off the road with Hopi reggae artist Casper & The 602 Band, stumbled across a Summit show, expressed interest in jamming, and linked up. Hunter (of Dine [Navajo] & Dakota Soiux heritage) started out adding percussion elements, then revealed his skanking guitar chops, vocal ability, and high energy stage presence.By March of 2008 the band had self-produced their debut album High Elevation Sound Flavor. The 13-track effort boasts all original tunes, spanning genres from reggae and hiphop, to funk and dub, to folk and punk - all with unique Summit signatures swirling around. Many songs, such as the introspective "What's The Difference", feature the hauntingly beautiful string sounds of Rachel B on the viola. With an album to promote, the crew set out on a few journeys, performing throughout Arizona, in Southern California and Telluride, Colorado - a favorite spot from the GFP days.Things were rolling into 2009, but valleys can always be found below peaks, and drummer Ben was feeling the beginning of a major recession in a major way. Needing a change, he moved back east before taking a job with the Park Service in Alaska at Katmai National Park (his pictures from there are ridiculous!). He needed to stop back in Flagstaff before the move to the Alaskan bush, and in a whirlwind weekend around Earth Day, he rocked three shows and recorded the drum foundations for another album!In need of a solid rhythm man, dj SOE asked old LOBE bandmate Conor Bailie if he wanted to dub it. He did, and was good at it, Conor stepped in and immediately had people dancing at shows. In the summer of 2009 Summit was performing constantly - shows included the Red Butte Gathering (a Native American / environmental activist event near the Grand Canyon to help fight against uranium mining there), and a Colorado Tour with stops in Boulder, Denver and Durango!The remainder of 2009 found Summit in their little studio developing Roots and Branches. This second self-produced offering springs to life with a solid tangling of roots reggae and positive hiphop laid down by the core members and branches out into Flagstaff's sound garden of talent. Featuring the LowCa$h Horn Section, Flagstafarians Safi (of Foot Solejahs) and B-Zach (of Synrgy), rude boy Paul Miller from The Skanksters, folk soulstress Karna along with classical guitar master Brian David, and the big booming energy of bateria drum group Sambatuque on one album will take any listener on a quite incredible journey in sound. Released on November 20, 2009, Roots and Branches CD Relase Party at The Green Room was very well attended, and as local entertainment weekly FlagLIVE recounted: "the Summit Dub Squad crew nearly started a full-on dance-riot with their solid grooves and feel-good, positive vibes."2010 was strong and full of highlights, including performances at Flagstaff Music Festival and the Good Times Festival, a great California Tour with big Ben back, on a vacation, to rock the kit, and a slew of community benefit shows. Andrae Blissett, a multi-talented musician from St. Loius, took over on the drum throne in the Spring, and has been holding it down ever since - particularly at two epic shows shared with rockers Brothers Gow - an all-night free-for-all Forest Fiesta and the Survivor Party in the North Rim Lodge on the edge of the Grand Canyon!Summit Dub Squad is currently working on their third studio album - to be released in first half of 2011 - followed by an album of cover songs from the crew's diverse pool of inspiration. In March of 2008 The Summit crew released their debut album High Elevation Sound Flavor in a Do-It-Yourself, independent style. The album was produced by the Summit Dub Squad and DJ SOE, who also did all of the recording, mixing and mastering. The album opens with the combination of didgeridoo and Native flute coming in over a tribal drum beat, which transforms into Hunter RedDays song My Mountain Speaks a narrative from the Holy Mountain, the song gives praise to the Sacred Mountain of the West, the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff. Here We Go really gets the album going as the energy is increased with hip hop lyricism and scratches. From there the listener is taken on a journey in sound, from the reggae anthem Waiting To Go to the folk-infused track Roots E to Southwestern-style song The Showdown and on to the funky dub-hop sound of Buried in the Tao. And just when you think everything is going so smoothly, they drop an organic punk flavor in there with ShakeDown BreakDown originally written by friend Lance Israel. The album swings through an impressive variety of sounds, features positive lyrics, uplifting rhythms, and also talented guest musicians. Several tracks (including the radio-played song Whats The Difference) showcase Rachel B. and her skills on the viola. Grass, as she liked to be called, was a full-time member of the squadron before moving to Chicago in the summer of 2008. Long-time friend and classical guitarist Brian David adds a unique island sound to Midnite Dub and Ama Etes voice graces Irie Dub with a lovely and mystical beauty. Along for the ride is a live version of Conqueror which has DJ SOE dropping the chorus from a Sly & Robbie record. A wicked dub version of My Mountain Speaks and the crucial Whats The Dub round out the album. High Elevation Sound Flavor is available on CD at the bands live shows and various music stores in Arizona and California, and is also available for digital download on iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster and Amazonmp3.com.

Roots and Branches combines musical influences from around the world with High Elevation Sound Flavor to create a unique musical experience intended to connect people with one another. Guitar, bass, keyboards, Native flute, drums and hip-hop based percussion provide graceful upbeat sounds for lyrics about peace and freedom during a time of war, greed, and environmental threats. We are hoping to share a pure positive self expression that connects and uplifts people, says Hunter E. RedDay, Dine. Like a tree with branches of musical vibes, Summit Dub Squad mixes and mashes reggae, dub, hip hop, funk, folk, punk, rock, Ska, African roots music, Brazilian samba tunes and indigenous sounds. The new release is named Roots & Branches because, the band is branching out to the four directions of the earth knowing we all come from the same tree we are all inner connected with our own branch, RedDay says. This CD is very crucial to the times we live in because it highlights many sounds from around the world and helps increase an understanding of other cultures.The Branches also included inviting some of Flagstaff's most talented and tenacious musical artists to add their creativity to the mix - in true "Squadron" style! Having the guests come into the studio to record was incredibly great fun, and the album really benefits from the collaborations. The album again takes the listener on a journey in sound, and like the debut album, High Elevation Sound Flavor, there is no one genre classification that can contain the Summit Dub sound. Elements of reggae, dub, dancehall, hiphop, funk, folk, ska, rock, jungle, and, yeppers, even a little samba, all come together on Roots and Branches.
