A story of misguided actions, Nia is a short, thoughtful film about a man whose search to end his loneliness falls prey to desperation.
Hywel is a middle aged man, recently made redundant. Single and living alone in a house he inherited from his Mother, his search for companionship ultimately leads him to seek solace in the arms of a young prostitute.
One night, Hywel drives the streets in search of the human touch; at least, the physical contact hes lacked for years. But in Nia, he finds a girl who also needs so much more. Desperate to feel wanted, or valued, she quells his doubt by quenching his thirst, so they can each find what they seek for a short while before the reality of their differing situations sets in.
The film explores the difficulty of life at the bottom of the ladder, the sparseness of middle aged longing, and the unstable female necessity to feel wanted. Through slow paced scenes, breathing space and empty shots, the focus on prevailing beauty in a world so unappealing never shifts, even if the characters involved will never notice that beauty for themselves.
Ioan has worked as an actor, writer and director for over twenty years.
His most recent works include a one man show based on the life of Alfred Russel Wallace - which toured in Wales and Brazil last year and is scheduled for a performance in the Natural History Museum in London before the end of the year.
He has also played the part of Berian for the award winning 'Pen Talar' (S4C) and James for 'Gwaith Cartref'. He will be joining the cast of 'Teulu' to play the role of Dafydd Wyn during the summer and autumn.
He will also be returning to the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time since 1986 to direct "Random' for Quad Theatre Company.
