Robin on: how the cinema began
In 2006, the cinema's reputation had thrived enough to warrant the move to a new venue on Stepney Bank in which the first building festival took place. the building was originally a warehouse on the verge of dereliction, saved and transformed by volunteers into the cultural venue we cherish today.
In the following 5 years, the venue has given dozens of volunteers the opportunity to acquire new skills in various areas and to contribute to the evolution of the venue. Promoters create new leaflets and websites, technicians offer their expertise in electrics, whilst others help out on the bar or jusr contribute their ideas to create a vibrant and exciting environment for everyone to enjoy.
Five years of the Star and Shadow
The venue consists of a bar and cafe area, a dark room, an artwork space, a workshop and storage area and of course - the cinema itself. To give you a feel of exactly what the Star and Shadow is like, we joined Lead Volunteer Dan and several new recruits on a tour of the building.
You've seen the bar, the cinema, the dark room and more, but none of these would be able to function at the Star and Shadow without the time and effort of the volunteers. We've been speaking to a few of them.
