Act Local...
School Renovation
'Think global, act local' is a mantra often referred to in regards to social involvement. The Atlanta In-town Chapter of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association has partnered with Atlanta Charter Middle School in an effort to provide alumnis an opportunity to do just that...."act local".
Like many Atlanta Public Schools, Atlanta Charter Middle School is facing numerous difficulties in the current economic climate. In addition to the special challenges that ACMS faces on a day-to-day basis in providing Atlanta area middle school students a viable alternative for student-centered and project-based learning, sweeping education budgets have stifled efforts to further improve the learning environment at the school.
"Extreme School Makeover" is a project that channels the resources of the Georgia Tech Alumni towards a tangible opportunity for improvement at a nearby Atlanta-area educational facility.
This project is designed to improve the functionality and quality of the public spaces in and around the school structure, resulting in an overall improved learning environment, increasing parent engagement & confidence, and staff effectiveness in educating our local youth.

PRIMARY RENOVATION PROJECTS:
LOUNGE: The teacher lounge is in need of wall renovation and overall aesthetic improvement. This is a lunch and meeting space facility for staff. Efforts to improve cooking, eating, privacy, and meeting activites are needed.
PUBLIC SPACE & BATHROOMS:
Due to the nature of using an older structure, the quality of public space need improvement. Examples of covering wiring to door and lock installation in bathroom stalls are required.
BASEMENT PROJECT:
This project represent the area of the school that requires the most elbow grease. Over time, various items from band equipment to desks and cabinets have made there way down to fill an excellent space that could serve a better purpose.
Many of the items located here could be renovated for other uses throughout the school. Many items need organization and many items simply need to be taken off-site.
LANDSCAPING PROJECT:
Hopefully this is self-explanatory.
