TESTIMONIALS
Kyle Burt worked in Classified Sales at the Toronto Star for 2 years. He was laid off and decided to help out as a committee member and a peer helper at the SONG 87-M Action Centre. His primary means of job searching was by replied to ads placed online.
He worked hard on making sure that his resume was up-to-date and was streamlined to meet the prospective employers needs! After a few months he found a full-time, permanent job, with full benefits at White Digital Media where he will be working in Advertising Sales.
His advice to fellow job searchers: Spend a lot of time on your resume! Be different!!!

Service Canada Session..........
Hi everyone........just wanted to give you a quick update as to our Service Canada session.
The session was more of a "question and answer" session given that there were only about 8 of us present. Now the big kicker, we find out that we were not supposed to apply for EI until after our "salary continuance" is complete. (ie. if you are getting paid by the company until say August 15th, you should only apply within 4 weeks after August 15th). The company is under no pressure to send out Records of Employment (ROE's) for us until after the salary continuance period has elapsed.
Given that some of you may not have received a copy of your ROE and it wasn't submitted to Service Canada, you may be receiving a system generated letter stating that your claim has been cancelled. Apparently there shouldn't be any problem when we reapply for EI benefits. A Service Canada Representative is going to look into the situation so that we don't face any unnecessary delays when we reapply.
It was a shock to us after the initial Toronto Star session and the pressure for us to get our EI claims in within 30 days after June 2nd but hopefully we will not run into any problems.
If any of you have heard any other or conflicting information please let us know.
The SONG 87-M Action Centre Adjustment Committee
Salary Continuance
A person can be considered an employee even if this person is no longer providing services to his employer when the latter continues to pay wages to the employee and the employee is entitled to all his or her benefits, including contributions to the pension fund, even when the employer does not expect the employee to show up to work or provide services. This type of payment is called "salary continuance".
In these cases, the person still holds insurable employment after the time this person ceases to render services to the employer and insurable hours are the hours actually paid but not worked since the person is considered to be on paid leave.
October 1, 2009
-The Committee has received a lot of response in regards to ROE's from employers and them being inaccurate. Please review your ROE once received from your previous employer and make sure it is correct for Service Canada or you will have difficulties with receiving your EI.

FAQ
Q. Why are you named S.O.N.G. 87-M?
A. We are called the SONG 87-M Action Centre because we are located above the SONG 87-M office in downtown Toronto.
Q. Are you affiliated with the Union?
A. No we are not. We are an independent, non-profit organization specially funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to assist workers who were laid off or offered voluntary packages in the Newsmedia Industry.
Q. Why are you located where you are?
A. We are located above the SONG 87-M offices because of its central location, easy accessibility and access to free parking. It is also economically fitting for us to be located here so we can allocate more funds to helping transition workers and providing services.
Q. Are your services free?
A. Yes. All services are free.

I am launching my fashion label "Sher Fashion" officially with a fashion show on the 5th of April, '10 at Gladstone Hotel on Queen West, Toronto.
The fashion show will show case spring/summer '10 collections of four local fashion designers including myself. All four designers are representing "Fashion District" on Queen West, the store where we merchandise our creations. Fashion District is a store representing 20 over local designers and merchandise produced locally. The main focus of the show is to create public awareness of the local talents and entrepreneurs. We intend to invite personnel from media such as CTV, Toronto Life, Toronto Star and Flair Magazine and will also have a press release prior to the event.
As new entrepreneurs, we intend to produce an effective show with minimal costs. Hence the help of the following service providers are needed in kind or on barter terms (trade of services).
Photographers
Videographers
Hair Stylists
Makeup Artists
Printers
Sponsors and donations in kind for raffle draw, or for any other expense of the event.
And last but not least, your word of mouth to promote the event.
In return, we are happy to advertise your company in the promotional material and the Event Program.
As for the event on 25th February, it is a grand re-opening event by the Fashion District, at 553, Queen West from 7pm onAlthough most of the crew is already being assigned for this event, we still might need more help. Thanks.
Regards,
Shirmila
