About
PROGRAMMES OF STUDYMFA in Painting, Printmaking and SculptureThe School offers a two-year full time post-graduate degree course, Master in Fine Arts (MFA) in the disciplines of painting, printmaking and sculpture. Twenty four hour access to studio facilities ensure that concepts and skills acquired at the undergraduate level become tools for building a new level of competenence and expertise. A compulsory component of the course is a survey of art history from ancient to contemporary periods of both Indian and Western art. This theoretical foundation is aimed at providing the student an understanding of art in its total context both material and subjective. The students submit a dissertation on a theoretical topic of their choice towards the end of course. The teaching does not presume to concern itself directly with a young artists work. Teachers incite such works and criticize the end products in a spirit of enquiry. Instruction at the School is essentially tutorial and involves a close working relationship between student and teacher, in which the latter encourages the student to make rigorous analysis of his/her work. A unique aspect of this course is the exposure the students get to the work of artists of national and international repute through the visiting faculty programme and workshops. In the print-making stream, the students are introduced to a wide array of basic print-making techniques, such as etching, screen printing, lithography, linocut, woodcut, dry point and engraving. The students are encouraged to explore and combine the expressive possibilities of these different techniques in their own work. These studio practices are complimented by a formal introduction to the history and aesthetics of printmaking medium. In sculpture stream, the students are encouraged in experimentation of different methods. History and aesthetics of sculpture are taught to develop a critical understanding in this domain.MFA in Art History - Visual studiesThe Art History and Visual Studies program covers historical perspectives on the visual arts, study of the methodologies of art history and critical theories, An emphasis on contemporary issues and tendencies in the practice of art and writing around it. Students pursuing a Major/specialization in Art History and Visual Studies are required to take minimum of 10 compulsory courses and 6 optional courses in the MFA in Art History.Students interested in the study of Art History and Visual Studies in conjunction with other programs are recommended to look at the elective subjects offered in the department of Communication, Performing Arts, History, Sociology, Political Science, Anthropology, English, Comparative Literature and so on. We respond to the vision of a learner-centered university by engaging in innovative teaching, and providing students with opportunities to travel to museums, galleries and sites, and to discuss their work in a supportive and challenging environment. We further student's command on literacy and, visual and spatial sensibilities through key texts and objects that are relevant to art's history. In addition, we give students the opportunity to engage critically with the most significant interpretative methods that art and architectural historians and critics use to analyze works over a sustained period of time at different levels. The study of Art History and Visual Studies, with its procedures of visual analysis, description and criticism, provides students with fundamental skills, an ability to discern quality in artistic works, to access creativity, to discriminate between the exceptional and the routine, and critically analyze the visual culture in particular and culture in general. The program will also provide students an understanding on how to engage with the ordinary, the popular and the vernacular, i.e. the historical complexity of the unorthodox visual cultural and spatial practices and other aesthetic systems and historical experiences for making and responding to visual and built art.Art history and Visual Studies students learn critical visual and spatial analytical skills and develop a richer aptitude for language that assists the description and the process of analysis. Our students acquire the ability to link style and formal appearance of various visual arts to their historical and social contexts from which the art arose. The skills and experiences they acquire thro ugh such a program will prepare students for careers in diverse fields such as museology, tourism and heritage, art journalism, gallery management etc. apart from individual praxis.
