Matt Spiva has taught percussion, music theory, audio technology and music production, concert band, jazz band and more for the past fourteen years at Natomas Charter School Performing and Fine Arts Academywhere he is currently the chair of the music department. He has also given private lessons for most of the last sixteen years and started the after-school music program at NCS PFAA in 2008.
He started drumming when he was young, but was a pretty slow learner and not particularly coordinated. Through many years of hard work (and undoubtedly frustrating lessons for his instructors) he was able to complete a Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance and a Masters of Music in Composition at California State University Sacramento.
He has performed as a percussionist with numerous professional groups in northern California including: The Sacramento Ballet Company, Music Now, Reddrum Percussion Group, California Wind Orchestra, Camellia Symphony, Sacramento Master Singers, Modesto Opera Company, River City Chorale, Magic Circle Theater, River City Theater Company, Sacramento Childrens Chorus, Sac State Percussion Group, and the Davis Chorale.
He has written numerous pieces for musicians in the area and significantly for the NCS PFAA Percussion Ensemble. He frequently collaborates with Jill Stripling and her modern dance classes, composing, and directing the percussion ensemble. His most recent large scale work Tributaries, was premiered at the Benvenuti Performing and Arts Center (in Sacramento) in February 2009.
Beginning Percussion is a great method book for someone who wants to learn how to play drums. It takes the student from learning to read quarter notes on a single drum to playing beats and fills on a full drum set. If learning to be a musician is important, then reading music is essential. This book will take you, step by step, through the fundamentals of reading music and start you on the path to being a drummer and percussionist.
Beginning Percussion is available in both print and electronic versions at lulu.com.

Audio Engineering and Producing
I have been the lead or co-engineer on seven full-length projects. I have also produced and engineered numerous demos and small projects.
I have been actively involved with educating young people in the field of commercial music. With Brian Rivers, I developed an award-winning program for high school students interested in live-sound, recording, and songwriting at Natomas Charter School Performing and Fine Arts Academy. Outcomes included a student run recording company (Blackrock Records), five full-length CDs, and a band that performed and recorded original music (No Bands Land).
