ARTIST STATEMENT
I abstract stylized medical diagrams from the 1960s and 1970s into messy, mix media works. With the resources available from a large research university, I am free to plumb the libraries’ more neglected medical shelves. With the imagery I collect, I apply phototransfers, graphite hair, wrinkles, and milky secretions in order to redigest otherwise sterile imagery.
I am interested in taking common, though outdated, science and translating the mundane into something unexpected. By playing with the balance between flatness of color and field of depth through digital, screen print, and drawing processes, I can airily subvert the original textbook dioramas.
The work is no longer about information and use, which the medical diagrams embody, but it speaks to a new and intimate translation of biological history.
