Welcome to Cincinnati Icebreakers Sled Hockey!
The Icebreakers, a 501(c)(3), was formed in 2008 after a year and a half of learning, planning, and educating the community about sled hockey for persons with a physical disability.
Sled hockey is the same as ice hockey except it is played in 'sleds' by persons who cannot ice skate in a standing position. Sled (also called sledge) hockey began in the 1960's in Sweden at a rehabilitation center. It is has been a Paralympic sport since 1994 with the USA winning their second gold in 2010 in Vancouver at the winter Paralympics.
Research supports participation in organized sports (at any level of competition) noting it improves one's quality of life, self-perception, self image, confidence and social skills . Our mission is to not only grow the sport of ice hockey, but to make ice hockey available to everyBODY.
