Architecture Summer Camp
SFNOMA organizes, sponsors and leads an annual Architecture Summer Camp for middleschool students. The primary purpose is to address the relative absence of architecture as acareer choice for young people in underserved communities by providing inspiration, role models and experience on the nature of the profession. The program began in 2010 and is held each summer at CCA, the California College of the Arts in San Francisco. The program exposes youths to the profession of architecture through hands-on studio experience, field trips and lectures.2011 Architecture Summer CampThe second annual camp provided a five-day experience held in June over two weekends. NOMA chapter members led by Rommel Taylor, Prescott Reavis, Deanna Van Buren and Charles Smith along with NOMAS students from CCA and UC-Berkeley mentored a group of enthusiastic middle school students. The students visited the Mission area of San Francisco, worked on theirown designs within the studios of CCA and listened to lectures and advice from seasoned and younger professionals. At the conclusion of the program, the students proudly presented their designs in a public forum.
The students are expected to present their design ideas and combined business strategies as it relates to their interpretation of the site from field trips and site analysis workshops established at the beginning of the camp. Click above to hear one of the students cultural intepretation of the 24th and Mission site for this year's summer camp.
