Welcome to the Senn Spot! I'm Ms. Senn and I'm very excited to be working with you and your child this year. First grade is a very exciting year! We will work hard to become great readers and writers. You will also become a great math problem solver, and you will make many friends too! We will do many fun things together in first grade and we will also learn a lot. I will be updating this website throughout the school year. What We're Learning

Reading
Reading is an integral part of your child's learning process. He/she will enter first grade as an early emergent reader and slowly grow into a more fluent reader. This however is no easy task! Your child will need your help and support. I encourage your child to read and/or be read to each night! Together we will have a great partnership in aiding your child to becoming a successful reader. I'm looking forward to watching him/her grow!

Each week your son/daughter will be reading two stories based on a general theme. The week's activities/materials will be somewhat consistent; however the skills and strategies will change. Please take note of the tentative schedule of some of the reading activities I have also included the lists of Words to Know for the entire school year.

Spelling
Each week your child will have a new list of spelling words sent home. The students are expected to practice each night and they are assessed on Fridays. The spelling words incorporate the phonics skills of the week (ie. short a, long u, /th/ /sh/ etc...) We begin the year with six spelling words and gradually increase to fifteen words by the end of the year.

Math Trailblazers is a comprehensive curriculum that maintains a balance between the development of math concepts and math skills. The curriculum includes different types of lessons:• Activities: Students explore math concepts and skills that use a variety of tools and methods.• Labs: Students investigate extensions of traditional mathematics.• Daily Practice Problems: Items which provide practice and review of math skills and concepts. • Games: Games that build familiarity with math skills and concepts, and fosters a connection between school and home. • Literature: Various illustrated stories that deal with math concepts and skills. The Math Trailblazers Program will prepare students to: • Know and apply basic math skills• Solve problems using various strategies• Be independent thinkers• Reason skillfully in diverse situations• Effectively communicate solutions to problems and methods for solving them• Work alone and in groups to solve problems
