ABOUT WHAT we doACT (Against Child Trafficking) is a 100% volunteer based grassroots movement based in Australia influencing many thousands of people worldwide.ACT has no paid staff and we do not receive any funding nor intend to. Our role is to facilitate the resourcing of organizations at the forefront of combating child trafficking, educating and motivating people to take action on behalf of innocent children.

LEARN What is Child Trafficking?Child trafficking is the trade of children for the purpose of forced labour, sexual exploitation or illegal profits. It usually involves the use of violence, fraud or coercion to recruit, hide and transport people illegally.Children are vulnerable to trafficking because they are easily exploited and more easily tricked than adults. They are also less able to demand their rights. In many countries, children’s rights are not adequately protected.How many children are trafficked?It’s difficult to estimate how many children are affected, but the latest figures suggest 1.2 million children are trafficked worldwide every year.Where does it happen?Child trafficking happens in every region of the world, but Asian countries, including Cambodia and Thailand, are recognised as hubs for trafficking, particularly for sex tourism. However it’s important to remember that wealthy countries are also a part of the problem because their citizens provide demand for trafficked children. For example, Australians have been identified as sex tourists in 25 countries. Places like Bali and East Timor are emerging as ‘easy targets’ for child sex exploiters.What are the effects of child trafficking?Trafficking damages children. The work they do is often dangerous or harms them physically. They may be kept in a confined space, forced to sit in one position all day working in poor light, or have to breathe in damaging dust and fibres. Children in the sex industry have a high risk of catching sexually transmitted diseases like HIV andAIDS.Psychologically, the effects of child trafficking can be devastating. Children can suffer acutely from being separated from their families, and the traumatic conditions and abuse they have suffered. Sometimes they even die from their injuries or illness.Being trafficked also deprives the child of an education, enslaving them further.Stats and factsThere are an estimated 246 million child labourers in the world.An estimated two million children are currently enslaved in the global commercial sex trade.Thailand, Cambodia, India and Brazil have some of the highest rates of commercial sexual exploitation ofchildren.Child Wise estimates that 25% of sex tourists worldwide are Americans, including U.S. military personnel overseas.
ACTION 21 WAYS YOU CAN TAKE ACTION1. Tell others- Expose the truth about modern-day slavery. Make sure everyone knows the 27 million dirtiest secrets.2. Invest in Change- Support those on the frontlines and enable them to make a difference. Help fund the most effective project to reduce slavery and care for its victims3. Consume wisely- Hold businesses accountable and ask corporations to join the fight. Buy Fair Trade products like coffee and chocolate.4. Watch- Keep an eye out and don’t turn away. If you suspect slavery or exploitation, call the authorities.5. Write- Do you know any journalists? Encourage newspapers, magazines and television stations to publish or to write stories about modern-day slavery, and how to stop it.6. Find out which countries are the worst trafficking offenders. Write a letter to their travel bureau and tell them you won’t visit the country until they address the issue.7. Purchase- Buying products made by survivors helps ensure their self-sufficiency.8. In public places, disseminate posters, brochures and other materials about trafficking.9. Organize- Organize your community to address the issue10. Advocate for change- call or write your elected officials. Tell them that you care about the issue of human trafficking and want stronger laws to protect victims. Keep telling them.11. Give healthcare- Help collect and pack medical supplies and equipment to be sent to shelters for survivors.12. Fight Sex Tourism- Ask travel agencies, hotels and tour operators to sign the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children in Travel and Tourism.13. Encourage healthcare providers and law enforcement officials to be aware of the signs of human trafficking. Get the information to school nurses, clinics and urgent care centers. http://www.acf.hhs.gov/trafficking/14. Rescue victims- pressure for raids of forced labor and slavery situations. Lawyers can make a big difference in advocating for legal investigation and prosecuting perpetrators. Have them join the team at International Justice Mission.15. Go- volunteer with organizations caring for survivors. Help build shelters. Teach English. Provide skills training. Ask the organization how you can help.16. Slave-Free Campuses- Start a group at your school or university, and make sure your campus is free of products made with slave labor.17. Safeguard transportation- ask airlines to provide training manuals to all their flight attendants on how to watch for victims being trafficked. Find the manual at www.innocentsatrisk.org.18. Faith, Schools and Freedom- Help your faith community or school become an Abolitionist Organization. Find theses handbook in the action downloads section at: www.notforsalecampaign.org.19. Do what you love- Use your talents to fight slavery. Do an art project and display it in a public place. Film a movie on the state of modern-day slavery. Write about the issue and post it on blogs.21. Write to the head office of your favourite brands asking them if they know whether or not all their materials and products were made by trafficked adults or children.

WHAT CAN BUSINESS DO?

All over the world, and in increasing numbers, people move in search of a better life. Some of them are coerced into work they have not chosen voluntarily. They have been deceived about the nature of their work or conditions of their employment contract, they work under threat, are subjected to violence, confined to their workplace or do not receive the wage that was promised to them. They are victims of forced labour, andthey have been trafficked into a situation from which they find it difficult to escape.Women, men and children are trafficked into a wide range of economic sectors and for different purposes. The trafficking of women and girls (and sometimes also boys) to countries where demand for sexual services is high has long been recognized as a serious problem. Only recently, more attention has been paid to the trafficking and exploitation of persons in mainstream economic sectors. Trafficking in persons has become a truly global enterprise.It can involve legal as well as illegal activities. It is fuelled by criminal networks or individuals seeking to exploit loopholes of national migration and labour market regimes.According to ILO estimates there are at least 2.4 million trafficked persons at any given point in time. Yet there are only a few thousand convictions of traffickers every year. Despite growing awareness and more effective law enforcement responsestrafficking remains a low-risk criminal enterprise with high returns.
There are many ways a business can responsibly address human trafficking within its own operations and supply chains:1. By learning more about human trafficking2. By meeting the terms of relevant national and international laws3. By conducting risk assessments to become aware of, manage and eliminate the risk when operating in sectors and regions of higher risk4. By conducting training and internal and external communications to pro actively raise awareness of the problem and identify how staff, business partners and customers may come into contact with it5. By taking steps to make it harder for traffickers to use its products, premises or services6. By adopting and implementing corporate policies with commitments to respect human rights, labour standards and anti-corruption.
Companies may risk being associated with human trafficking in a range of ways:1. Traffickers may use a company's products, premises and/or services in connection with their trafficking activities.Example: Transporting trafficked victims via international airlines, shipping companies, etc.2. By allowing exploitation of trafficking victims within their supply chain. Example: The use of forced labour by suppliers or sub-contractors.3. By employing a workforce supplied by third party agents over which they have limited oversight. Example: Using labor brokers whose ruthless treatment of workers amounts to trafficking.What are the business risks?There are two types of risk associated with human trafficking: legal and reputational.Legal risksBusinesses directly or indirectly involved through their supply chain risk violating national civil and/or criminal legal requirements, resulting in custodial sentences, fines and/or civil claims.Reputational risksClaims of being implicated in human trafficking, even if unproven, can damage the interests of a business in many ways including reducing consumer demand for a company's products; loss of share price due to concern; low workforce morale; and government disapproval
