Since 1994, Scott Turner has trained over 6000 people to handle their firearms safely and responsibly. We are very proud to have a 100% safety record. He has accomplished this by having a a professional, clear, and concise curriculum. Starting at a very young age, Scott was taught about safe and responsible gun handling. After his Mother passed, Scott's Father enrolled him into martial arts. Going into the military at the age of 17, he excelled at being a soldier. In 1989 he graduated Ft. Benning's Infantry school. Following his motto of "if you are not progressing, you are regressing", Scott has continued his training through the ATA (American Taekwondo Association), NRA (National Rifle Association), ITTS (International Tactical Training Systems), Krav Maga (Israeli Military Self-Defense), not to mention various seminars and systems of other schools. Eddie Eagle: The NRA’s Eddie Eagle Gunsafe® teaches children pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade what to do if they find a gun.Junior Firearm Course Lv. 1: The SDE’s Junior Firearm course is designed for children 10 years old and older. Students are taught the NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; loading and unloading a single shot 22lr; basic marksmanship; and proper maintenance. Students will fire approximately 50 rounds of .22 rimfire.Junior Firearm Course Lv. 2: The SDE’s 2nd Junior Firearm course is designed for children 10 years old and older who successfully passed the level 1 course. Students are taught the NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; loading and unloading a bolt action and semi-automatic .22; basic marksmanship; and proper maintenance. Students will fire approximately 100 rounds of .22 rimfire.Home Firearm Safety Course: The NRA’s Home Firearm Safety Course® is a non-shooting course and teaches the student basic knowledge, skills, and to explain the attitude necessary for the safe handling and storage of firearms and ammunition in the home. This is a 4 hour course for safe gun handling that is conducted in the classroom only. Students are taught the NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling; primary causes of firearm accidents; firearm parts; how to load certain action types; ammunition components; cleaning; care; storage of firearms in the home; and the benefits of becoming active an active participant in the shooting sports.Basic Handgun Safety (Level 1): The SDE’s Basic handgun class is designed to accomplish three things: Increase knowledge of firearms, the NRA’s three rules for safe gun handling, and to provide certification for the student to apply for their concealment license in the state of Oregon. The student will learn about basic firearm safety, ammunition, knowledge & handling of a firearm, how to operate a pistol, basic shooting skills, basic Oregon gun law, home security, non-lethal options, and safe storage of a firearm. The SDE’s Practical Handgun is for students who take their self-defense very seriously and wish to continue their education on firearms. Oregon

The SDEs Basic handgun class is designed to accomplish three things: Increase knowledge of firearms, the NRAs three rules for safe gun handling, and to provide certification for the student to apply for their concealment license in the state of Oregon. The student will learn about basic firearm safety, ammunition, knowledge & handling of a firearm, how to operate a pistol, basic shooting skills, basic Oregon gun law, home security, non-lethal options, and safe storage of a firearm. Students will fire approximately 50 rounds in this class. Eligibility To qualify for a concealed handgun license you must:- Be a U.S. citizen. You may apply if you are not a U.S. citizen provided that you have lived in Oregon for at least six months and have written proof that you have declared your intent to become a citizen with the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service.- Be at least 21 years old.- Be a resident of Oregon.- Not have any outstanding warrants for your arrest.- Not be awaiting trial in a criminal matter or currently completing a diversion agreement. Minor traffic infractions such as speeding do not count as a criminal matter. Traffic crimes such as DUII are a criminal matter.- Never been convicted of a felony.- Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor within the last four years.- Never have been convicted of a crime of domestic violence.- Not have been found to be mentally ill under ORS 426.130.- Not be subject to a stalking order or restraining order.- Not be an unlawful user of, or addicted to, a controlled substance.- Not have been discharged from the Armed Forces under dishonorable conditions.- Not be required to register as a sex offender in any state.- If you were under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court for certain offenses, it must be more than four years since discharge.- You must show written proof of competence with a handgun as defined by statutes.- Pass a background check. Background CheckDuring the background check, information you put on your application is verified and your criminal history, contacts with law enforcement, and information from acquaintances are checked. Oregon law allows the sheriff to deny a concealed handgun license if there are reasonable grounds to believe that you have been or are reasonably likely to be a danger to self or others, or to the community at large, as a result of your mental or psychological state, as demonstrated by a past pattern of behavior or participation in incidents involving violence or the threat of violence. You may be denied if you have a history which shows an inclination toward confrontation with others, including neighbors or family members, a history of conflict with law enforcement officers, offenses with firearms, or documented problems with alcohol and/or drug abuse.Oregon and Federal laws prohibit a person from owning or possessing a gun if they have had a felony conviction that was reduced to a misdemeanor after completion of probation, any convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence, have been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces, have renounced their citizenship, or are subject to a court protective order that was issued after a hearing in which the person had an opportunity to participate and restrains the person from harassing, stalking, or threatening an intimate partner or the child of such intimate partner.If any of these conditions apply to you and you nonetheless feel you are eligible for a license, bring appropriate documentation, dates and explanation of circumstances including copies of any applicable pardons, certificates of discharge, or court orders surrounding your circumstances for further consideration.Proof of CompetencyThe following are accepted as proof of competency:- Completion of any N.R.A. firearms safety course.- Completion of any firearms safety course given by N.R.A. certified instructors.- Completion of any law enforcement firearms safety course.- Written evidence of experience with a handgun through participation in organized shooting competition.- Written evidence of experience with a handgun through military service.NOTE: Due to differing requirements, an out of state concealed handgun license may not satisfy the competency requirementsApplication Process (Linn County)Applications may be obtained from the Sheriffs Office or downloaded from this website. You may apply Monday through Friday 8 am to 11:30 am and 1 pm to 4:30 pm at the Civil Division located in Room 317 at the Courthouse 300 SW 4th Avenue, Albany. You must bring your proof of competency at the time of application. The fee is $50 payable by cash, check, or money order. We do not accept credit cards. There is also a $15 fee to process your fingerprints if you have never had a license before. This must be paid in a check or money order made payable to Oregon State Police.

Utah

The SDE’s Utah concealment course is to provide the necessary information and certification so the student can apply for the Utah CCW license. This license is recognized in 34+ states. While our competitors may SEEM like they charge less, our students have found that they are infact much more expensive! When you attend our Utah course, you will not have to run around town getting your passport photo ($20), Fingerprints ($35), Notary ($5), and the post office. We take care of EVERYTHING! (Notary, Fingerprinting, Passport photo, copy your drivers license, and even mail it!). This is a great savings and very convenient right? In 5 years when you have to renew, SDE will not charge you a second time for the same course! That is a 100% savings!Requirements: * There are certain requirements that the state of Utah has set in order for you to get your concealed carry permit. * Here’s a list of Utah Concealed Carry requirements: You must be at least 21 years of age to receive your Utah Carry Permit. You can’t have any of the following convictions: Felony Violent crime Offense involving alcohol** Illegal use of controlled substances or narcotics** Moral turpitude (crimes against community morals)** Domestic Violence **Please note that some offenses require a waiting period but do not preclude getting a permit.If a court has adjudicated you as mentally incompetent then you are not allowed to obtain your Utah concealed carry permit.

Esther has been involved with SDE since January of 2007. Since then she has helped over 663 (as of May 2011) people learn how to use their firearms more safely and responsibly. While her primary discipline is handguns, she is amazing with a rifle or shotgun. Esther is the backbone of the organization. Her ability to multitask and her attention to detail ensures all curriculum and administrative tasks are complete. As an NRA and NWSDE instructor, she excells at breaking down the basics for beginner and intermediate level students.She is in the process of starting a 'Hot Shots' class that will be for female students only. Robert Goins

Robert Goins is the Training Director of Washington State.Located in Lakewood, Washington, he is just minutes away from Ft. Lewis, Tacoma, and a short drive from Seattle.Robert is a 6th Degree black belt and Master instructor. He is a certified instructor with the NRA, NWSDE Firearms, NWSDE Krav Maga, Jiu-Jitsu, and Taekwondo. He is an international level instructor. We are lucky to have him as a part of our organization.Robert has traveled the world training in defensive tactics. He has traveled to Egypt, Korea, Canada (yes that counts), He knows the importance of refusing to be a victim. In 1990 he was attacked by 3 burglers with knives. Chris Lund is our Chief of instruction for our hand to hand system: Krav Maga. Chris has been involved with Krav Maga since 2002. His no BS approach to teaching has earned the respect of all our students. His background doesn't just stop there. In the Army he was a combat medic, stationed over seas, Chris gained massive experience on how to deal with battlefield injuries. Jason is our Wyoming director of operations.Jasson is a 3rd Degree Black Belt and holds these certifications: NWSDE Krav Maga instructor, NWSDE Firearms instructor, NRA firearms instructor, and BCI.
