Statement
Artist Statement Some of us are chosen to be quiet observers. We examine nature, people, moments in time, retaining and synthesizing the information that affects us deeply. The perceptive artist is aware of the connections, patterns, and similarities that permeate the life force. These are the threads of being that bind our spirits. The textural complexities of our lives are woven together from many fragments. Verbal story telling, visual imagery, and written expression relate our inner histories. Through these mediums we express joy, pain, love, anger, hate, and collected memories. We are connected through our perceptions of past, present, future, and death. Awareness of these states of connection are exxential in our concept of self and how we choose to project ourselves to others. I have aways been a collector. A major part of my art is searching for the objects, photos, and texts that make up my collage pieces. My travels in search of media have taken me to flea markets, attics, and estate sales in small towns throughout the South. I have met many interesting characters on these journeys who have shared stories of their regions, their ancestors, and their life experiences. I have become fascinated with the personal information that people leave when they pass away. I often find it in old books, locked drawers, and dusty boxes tucked away in remote corners. I've come to look at these scraps as fragments of the soul. I have attempted through my artwork to collect and assemble the discarded parts of people's lives. It is my desire that the viewer attach his own meaning to the visual presentation. As we travel through life, what we read, the words we write, what we have spoken, and the objects we save are reflective symbols of our collected journey.
