A Story of a Sattvic Start-Up
(Click the text below to maximize and click again to minimize.)
I know. You're thinking "...Satt-huh?!?". So. Sattva. The name represents that which is pure and balanced, as determined by Ayurveda (the ancient Indian science of healing). Though all of my eats are not strictly Sattvic by Ayurvedic standards (for example, garlic and other deliciously pungent foods are not considered pure), the food's collective name appropriately represents the wholesomeness of its ingredients and the love and awareness with which it is made.
For more information on Ayurveda, visit your friend Google (I can offer specific book recommendations for those of you who are REALLY interested). And for you New Yorkers who are intrigued by Yoga, Meditation, Ayurveda, etc... Do visit ISHTA yoga (http://www.ishtayoga.com/)-- purveyors of beautiful teachings and many beginner-friendly specials. I started my teacher training with that family of yogis and loved it dearly. With any luck and lots of focus, I will eventually go to Med School in Kerala to obtain my B.A.M.S., or Bachelors in Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery.
Regardless of my curricular and extra-professional goals, I do know that Sattva, my darling food baby, is a keeper for years to come. I hope you join me in my journey to sustainable satisfaction. And do remember to maintain integrity in the journey itself-- perhaps you'll never reach your so-thought destination but at least you can have a good time on the trip there! Process orientation, not progress orientation. Learn it, live it, LOVE IT!

"Not for Self, but for Service", or Sattva and Social Justice
I was recently enrolled in an emotionally (and otherwise) intense 3 day workshop with Hala Khouri, co-founder of "Off the Mat, Into the World", and generally Amazing World-Saver.
The workshop deals with teaching yoga to higher risk populations. With negotiating and resourcing your own traumas so you are all the more equipped as a mentor towards those who are more underserved. And oh, in this world, at increasing disconnect with nature, are we ALL ever more at risk. and undeservingly underserved!!!
So now I have all the more ideas (on which I will later elaborate in full technicolor detail) about what Sattva can really DO for its community, once actually profitable... Feeding local juvenile prison populations pro bono once a week, say. Or pre- and post-natal teenage moms, who must stay healthy not just for themselves but for the new blessed life they are bringing into our world. For boy, are they all misfed. We're all misfed! Culinarily... existentially.
Wish I had the start-up capital to do some serious "seva" (service, per Sanskrit and Indian philosophy) right from the start. I can however do this: all of the Sattvic Saturdays will be donation based to make them as accessible as possible to the community at large. Really, you have no excuse not to come! Save for the end of the world as brought on by non-sustainable practice. For all catering I will have a base price to meet my hourly wages and ingredient cost, but prices can always be negotiable depending on my clients' general circumstance. Same goes for home delivery and pick-up services.
Perhaps not the most stable business plan, and my investors may not be the happiest, but then, I am searching most fervently for stability of my heart and soul. I so truly believe in and wish to spread the model of a gift and barter economy. I want OFF of The Grid.
One step at a time-- who wants to take that peaceful walk alongside me?

six impossible things before breakfast." - Lewis Carroll
