Arjun & Thambi
Hello. We are Arjun and Thambi. We are at an island that we have never gone to before. We went to an island called Ceylon. We work in a tea plantation now. But why? Why did we leave our village to come to this island? That is because when we lived in the village, we worked at the tannery. Even though we worked very hard, we earned only one rupee each day. Every day we went to work in the early morning and we came back home when the sky was very dark, not light enough to see anything but the glowing fireflies outside. We were sick of the conditions we worked under, so many of the workers at the tannery decided to go on strike. After a few days, however, many of the wokers on strike went back to work. Even though the pay was very low, they needed all they could get. So we decided to quit the job. Thats the reason why my brother and I came to Ceylon. Even though we miss our family, we knew we had to do it. We hope this job can give us a better life, not to us only, but also for our family back at our village.
