Our History
The Reef Rod and Gun Club came to life and was incorporated as a 501 (C) 7 Non Profit corporation in February of 1997. With four original members, and the desire to have something a little different than most on property clubs, the R&GC is now approaching a 500 membership plateau.
Since its inception the R&GC has been committed to a conservation program involving both the fishery and the habitat. The flats markers in front of Ocean Reef, as well as on numerous other flats in the area, were installed by the R&GC and are maintained on a yearly basis.
Member benefits include: discounts at Marine Max, invitations to fishing and "how-to" seminars, special guest lectures at the ORC Cultural center, fishing and shooting trips, ability to join Card Sound Clay targets, and dinners, cocktail parties and fundraisers throughout the entire season.
The Rod & Gun Club maintains a clay target facility located on Card Sound Road approximately 11 miles from the Ocean Reef front gate. R&GC members are eligible to become members of Card Sound Clay Targets for a one time fee of $500.
Only through membership and participation in R&GC events have we been able to donate to the following organizations and causes over the past few years:
Bonefish and Tarpon Trust , for continuing bonefish and tarpon research with the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine Science.
Ocean Reef Conservation Association , scholarship program which assist high school seniors on their way through college when they major in Marine Sciences.
Marine Mammal Conservancy , for their continuing efforts to save stranded, as well as injured marine mammals, i.e., manatees and whales.
Florida Keys Turtle Hospital , to help return turtles to sea who have had the misfortune to either ingest fishing line or who had propeller damage to their shell.
Mote Marine Laboratory , for a project to return sea urchins to the Keys reefs. Sea urchins help keep coral clean and healthy by eating the algae on the coral.
South Florida National Parks Trust , for a project to replace, as well as install more flats and channel markers in Florida bay and Everglades National Park.
International Game Fish Association , for their marine education fund and a circle hook research study.
Don Hawley Foundation , which is geared to help Florida Keys fishing guides who need short term financial assistance.

The Bonefish Bonnies
Welcome all women who fish or would like to! Here is an overview of our womens fishing club:
- Purpose of the club:
To gather women interested in fishing who want to learn more about all aspects of the sport, go fishing together and have fun in the process. All women who fish - or would like to - are welcomed.
- Membership:
Women interested in learning about the sport from beginners (never held a fishing rod) to advanced anglers (catching bonefish on a fly). We most often plan events on Wednesdays.
- Activities:
Fishing outings twice a month. Outings take place here are th Reef, on the flats (inshore, not deep sea), are guided with two anglers per boat, and for either half- or full-day time periods. All boats are
outfitted with fly rods, spinning rods and bait. Cost of the guide and boat are shared between two anglers. (If there are an odd number of anglers, the total cost of the day is divided by the total number of anglers.) On the fishing day, check in with the Outfitters (in the Fishing Village) 15 minutes before scheduled departure time to take care of billing. Meet the boats on the dock opposite the Galleys front door.
- Luncheons / Programs once a month.
The Luncheons are held at the Key Largo Anglers Club at a cost of $25. Programs are educational as well as entertaining and related to fishing local waters. Past programs have included celebrity anglers such as Joan Wulff, Billy Pate and Stu Apte, as well as education on how to tie fishing knots, how best to work with a guide, and even the latest fashion in womens fishingwear. The last luncheon of the year is the Awards ceremony, with all sorts of awards presented for fishing and for enthusiasm.
- Tournaments.
The No-Rules Tournament, begun by Adelaide Skoglund and Patty Jacobson in 2004 was such as a success that its become a Bonnie tradition. Literally, there are no usual fishing rules that apply. Catch anything you can, anyway you can, in any boat you can, wearing anything you can! Back to the real world, the Flats Tournament is geared to preparing us for regular tournaments here at the Reef and elsewhere. We had a record number of anglers attend last year and lots of fun was had. The Bonnies have more fun!
-Casting Sessions
A fly casting warm-up session is held in January, and several times throughout the season. Beginner, intermediate and advanced levels will be addressed. When guides are asked to assist in casting instruction, we will charge a small fee per person to compensate for their time. Other ladies classes in fly casting are organized by the Rod & Gun Club with Sandy Moret and Chico Fernandez, world-famous fly fisherman living in the Keys, who teach the Ladies Fly Casting School at Ocean Reef.
- Trips several each season.
We had wonderful responses to the overnight ladies fishing trips to local areas like Flamingo and Everglade City. We arrive at our fishing destination in time for cocktails and dinner the evening before, have guided fishing the next day, and depart in time to be home for dinner. Prices will be determined for each trip.
- Christmas party.
Each Christmas season one of the members hosts a cocktail party with spouses. Details will be announced in the annual calendar.
- Burgee Bar Celebration
In January after our first outing there will be a Burgee Bar Celebration to toast the beginning of the year.
The Fishing Is Not Slowing!
By Sarah Hoog
Orvis Store Manager
I always say to my self in mid-May that some of the best fishing of the year happens then, but so many are not here to experience it. Bonefish flock to the flats in nice big schools and the Tarpon are passing by on their spring migration oceanside. Permit are around in big numbers, you can look for them on the tidal weed lines in creeks like Broad and Caesars. There are lots of juvenile redfish around and some not so juvenile ones too. Snook have been moving around in small schools on the flats near the mangroves.
Offshore sailfishing continues to be very good; Benson Fords Sweet Release went 11 for 12 on sails just a week ago. The Dolphin begin to show up in steady numbers and you can fight anything from a Blackfin Tuna to a Cobia in depths under 120 feet. So, my questions is, why would you leave now, just when everything is getting so good?! The flats guides have been having lots of success with their anglers hooking up to big Tarpon, the anglers just havent been so successful in keeping those fish hooked! Captain James Koch released one around 100 lbs on a crab and there were some other hookups on fly, but the wind has been making it tough to fly cast.
Fly Casting School
If youre looking to improve your casting or just want to get started with a fly rod, give us a call and book your spot in our Fly Fishing School taking place at the store on Saturday, May 7 from 9am to 4pm. Spaces are very limited so dont wait until the last minute to book your spot. The cost is $250 per person and will include lunch. The school will provide demonstrations and/or hands-on instruction in Fly Casting, Knot & Leader Tying, Equipment & Fly Selection, Fishing Etiquette and Safety. The goals of this class are to be safe, have fun, and to prepare the student to successfully fish on their own from a boat or wading. Give fishing manager Donald a call at the store at 367-2227 to book your space!

Hello Bonnies,
Now that we have the Holidays behind us I want to remind you about the Bonnie trip April 4 to April 7 to North Riding Point Club. Yes, it is a fishing camp in the Bahamas! We have requested the entire club which will accommodate 14 anglers...we have 9 signed up already....Nancy Leenhouts, Michel Williams, Shirley Shumway, Linda Falk, Nina Patterson, Mona Brewer, Christine Patton, Judy Brand and Jeannie Schiavone.
We would fly over to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island (30 min flight from Miami) and then taxi 20 miles to North Point. April 4 we would travel to Grand Bahama, fish for 2 1/2 days and return April 7. I will be working on the travel details as we get a better idea of the number of Bonnies.
The rate is $2,500 double occupancy including taxi, guide fees, housekeeping, breakfast, picnic lunch, dinner, beer and wine. Tips not included.
Please go on line and review North Riding Point Club---you will see why we think this will be a great new adventure for us.
Please call or email me if you have any questions or want to be added to the list of attendees. I look forward to hearing from you. 367-4925 jrsorc_aol.com
Tight lines!
