Rob Jones’ art belongs to a tradition of reinterpretation using existing objects to provoke a consideration of the subject often with wider or alternative associations.
He does this via sculptural and installation work supported by research in drawing, painting and photography and often using found objects to realise these.
He aims, through his artworks, to generate a heightened awareness of individuality and consciousness in the viewer with subtle strategies and interactions.
Rob explores the shadow in art looking at what remains hidden from view and in doing so he is acknowledging impossibilities, gaps and the unknown drawing variously on philosphical aesthetics, art history and personal experience. He describes himself as a happy melancholic and is not afraid to include theatricality, absurdity or games in his art practice, his work thus engages us by employing intrigue as well as humour and familiarity. Site specificity is playing an increasingly significant role in his thinking and making as he chooses to use awkward, overlooked and liminal spaces.
Rob was born in Cardiff in 1966, has lived and worked in the UK and abroad and studied Fine Art in York.

For my 2011 degree show I made several separate works connected by a common theme. By its very nature the gap, the hidden, the unknown and art's impossibilities remain difficult to articulate and in some ways my efforts to do that resort to metaphor. But I believe the work also manifests itself through a distancing from the object, an obfuscation of an image and a juxtaposition of materials. Either way it is an attempt to momentarily blur our focus and suspend the onslaught of stifling rationality.
The making of this work was significant for me not only because it represents the culmination of a three year journey but also because there was a unknown conclusion right up to the show opening. The physicality of the work did not allow the usual reassurances of making beforehand and the outcome was anticipated for a long time. The venues created risks and an unpredictability that I wanted to be part of the experience for me. I suppose it was about relinquishing an element of control, allowing things to happen more freely and not being overly proscriptive with the result. I would like to be the sort of artist who has the confidence to work like this all the time.
Oil, graphite and emulsion on canvas, bed frame, wooden door.
As part of CREATE 11 Rob is holding his degree show at both the YSJ campus and Bar Lane Studios. The cellar venue of Bar Lane will host further installation work and sculptures some of which will be given away to visitors to the show.
