Ears, My Ears Interview 06/11/2010:This is first interview for Ears, My Ears!!! and I decided to talk with one of a most interesting new artists for me - Norman Knight aka Alpha Boy. He is from Berlin, his first EP will out in a two weeks...and I already posted some of his tracks, so I won't tell you nothing more). Read!)EME: First question - introduce yourself and tell about your first music steps.AB: I am a young artist from Germany who lives in Berlin city. I would describe myself as a type of artist that always searching for the strong, electronic feelings of music. As a little boy I made my first steps into music with a violin. Some years later came a playstation with music 2000 into my life and that changed everything. It was a fantastic time with many new things which opened me gates to the world of infinite sounds.EME: Hmm..next question...what is your music style? Describe it, please.AB: My music style is heavily influenced by big and small things around me in my daily routine. It can be a little single sound from a elevator or what someone has said to me. But the biggest influence are the 80´s. All these things of the 80´s, like movies, fashion and music, shape my unique sound which I would describe as the a mix of new wave, electronica and indie dance.EME: You are from Berlin, and this city stereotypically for me is a totally techno city) So, you had to absorbe some of this style, hadn't you? And what about your musical influences at all? In childhood and now. Are they different?AB: I have never saw Berlin as a place of techno music because as a child I have heard more classical music. Just say, whether techno music has affected me, I can not because all the styles of the past decades has influenced me. The difference from then to now is that I hear music now much more open and intense, what i did not as a child. Sometimes today i feel like I can breathe the music in.EME: Interesting)...now let's talk about your music stuff...about process...what do you use and how it is usually going?AB: The first step of all processes is that I have a idea of a little melody. The following step is that I start to compose the midi notes in my DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and now comes the hardest part. I need many days to found the perfect sounds to get a good harmony of all instruments. The second last part is to make a good mixdown. This part is a detail job. And the last one is the mastering. All these process might take 4-14 days. Its a hard work, but i live for it.EME: About your name: why Alpha Boy? What does it mean?AB: In greek meaning of Alpha is "beginning". My live beginns each day anew. "Boy" because I am a young man and I feel like always as a 14 years old boy.EME: With what musician (dead or alive) do you want to work?AB: Thats a good question. I think I would take Harald Faltermeier. He was the composer of the soundtrack from Beverly Hills Cop, Top Gun....! His music made me what I am today.EME: Hm...interesting choice...you said "Beverly Hills Cop", you said about influence of 80s on you and because of your music at all I just must to ask you - what is your favorite thing (whatever you want) from 80s? But just thing. Ok, no - two things - material and non-material)AB: My first choice is a audio cassette and the second one is the fall of the Berlin Wall.EME: And the last question which is not actually a question) - your little chart of now - 3 tracks.AB: 1. Mais non, cest trop niais, et surtout faux ! Ma seule excuse cest de vous avoir préparé un article qui donnera du fil à retordre aux dyslexiques !Toi, cher lecteur, venu sur YAH afin dassouvir ton indomptable avidité musicale, tu me connaitra à travers mes articles, inutile de sétendre plus sur ma personne. La seule chose que tu dois savoir cest que je ne mords pas, donc si au détour dune soirée tu croises ma tête, nhésite pas à venir me saluer, ou me fustiger, selon ton humeur et ton taux dalcoolémie.Trêve de plaisanteries, je vais te donner ce que tu attends tant, du son frais tout droit venu de Berlin, car en ce moment ça caille sec.Cest à travers ce jeu de mots, plutôt vaseux je dois lavouer, que jintroduis Norman Knight aka ALPHA BOY, un artiste qui vient de signer son premier EP, The Return Of 1986, sur le label DesignRockers. Afin de vous éclairer un peu plus sur le personnage et lEP en question, je me suis permis de contacter lartiste pour lui poser une courte série de questions. Et cest avec laide de la british du crew, susdit notre chère BAXTER nationale, quun Allemand et un Français, ont pu communiquer dans un anglais le plus parfait. (Ca fait bientôt deux ans que jessayais de caser un « susdit » dans une conversation, cest enfin chose faite). Merci donc à ma correctrice translator !Voici donc les questions que jai posées à un artiste très à lécoute et qui, je lespère, sera autant apprécié par vous, que par moi.BTPN: Bonjour Norman, tu es un berlinois de 25 ans cest bien ca ? ça va?AB: Je vais bien merci, ouais cest correct, je viens de Berlin et jai 25 ans.BTPN: Ca, cétait pour la question inutile, maintenant si tu devais définir ton EP avec un seul mot, lequel serait-il ?AB: Je pense que je choisirai le mot « Flashback »BTPN: Que signifie le retour de Norman Knight ? Doù reviens tu ?AB: Avant de composer la track « The return of Norman Knight » jai pris une longue pause que je qualifierai de « pause créative ». Et puis à la fin de ma composition, jai trouvé ce nom, un peu par hasard, et jai trouvé que ça collait bien.BTPN: Ta cover et ton titre « The Wraith 1986 », qui semblent être une référence au film du même nom, font parti dun univers automobile très eighties, à quoi cela fait il référence ?AB: En fait, ça se réfère au quotidien, au mode de vie de cette époque. Une voiture de course, genre une Ferrari Testarossa ou alors une Pontiac Firebird, dans ces temps là cétait la parfaite description de la liberté. Pour moi cest encore un peu la même chose.BTPN: Deux de tes 4 titres sont donc déjà en référence à quelque chose, Stardust et Forgotten dreams ont-ils eux aussi une signification personnelle ?AB: Je suis une personne qui a pour habitude dêtre de bonne humeur. Par conséquent « Stardust » (la vie en rose) reprend un peu de ma vie.En ce qui concerne le titre « Forgotten Dreams », cela me rappelle les rêves que je faisais quand jétais gamin et je suis retombé sur ces moments que javais oubliés depuis tant dannées.BTPN: Je trouve ton univers musical et visuel, bien que personnel, à mi chemin entre Danger et Kavinsky, quelles sont tes inspirations ?AB: La plupart de mes inspirations sortent tout droit des 80s. Je ne suis pas lenfant nostalgique de cette décennie mais jai encore plein de souvenirs en tête, et personnellement je suis fou du son old school. Il est juste magique. Je trouve effectivement que les sons de Danger et de Kavinsky sont dans un univers assez similaire, même si chacun garde bien sa « touche personnelle ».BTPN: Après cet EP très prometteur, pouvons nous espérer un LP ?AB: Actuellement, je bosse sur mon second EP. Mais pour lalbum je pense sincèrement que ce ne sera pas de si tôt, plutôt dans un futur assez lointain, mes auditeurs vont devoir patienter.BTPN: Tu es le genre de personne à faire un morceau dun trait en moins de 24h ou au contraire bâtir ton morceau sur plusieurs mois ?AB: Cest toujours différent, des fois jai besoin dun seul jour ou au contraire, deux semaines pour une track. Mais cest précisément cette variété qui me fait continuer à produire de la musique toujours plus fun ! Et surtout à menrichir avec toutes ces sensations de malade.BTPN: Merci davoir répondu à mes questions, et cest avec plaisir que je te fais découvrir au public français !AB: Merci à toi, jespère que mes réponses étaient satisfaisantes !
