Background
Our course dispells the myths and misinformation about the media, clarifing how it works and what a journalist is really after.
We uncover how and why things can go wrong and use this knowledge to create a positve position from which to engage the media.
News 3.5-4 hours
Of the two types of media coverage, News is the most common and the most misunderstood.
This course clearly defines what is News and what an interviewee must be aware of before agreeing to a news interview.
A newsmaker must be equiped with the skills to handle this artifical form of communication.
Course Components
Question and Answer (Q&A) 3.5 hours
With the emergence of talk radio and the 24 hour news cycle the Q&A style of media has increased dramatically.
Old fashioned 'non answers' are a turnoff and sabotage the results a newsmaker is seeking.
Successful Q&A interviews require different preparation and delivery skills to News.
Media 7 hours
News and Q&A sessions are offered as two half day courses but both courses can be combined in a full day session.
Taking Talkback 2 hours
Journalist 's questions are typically susinct and considered. Questions from the public can be emmotive and unpredictable.
This course adds to the skills from Q&A better equiping the newsmaker to handle talkback questions or questions 'from the floor' at a rally or even questions 'without notice' in a work meeting.
Speech Prep. & Presentation 2x 2.5 hours
This two part course eliminates 'the blank sheet' horror giving straightforward techniques to prepare effective presentations.
The second part works on presentation skills required to reduce 'the nerves' and give a speech that achieves a purpose and is natural and entertaining.
Refresher 1-2 hours
In order to remain 'fighting fit' when it comes to dealing with the media or to remind executives who only sporadically face interviews Media Assist offers a series of Refresher Courses to remind and refresh the skills gained in the media courses.
A Refresher course is also a great time to test drive new messages or holding statements or make sure a spokesperson is 'still on the same page' as the 'Comms' team.
Message Creation by arrangement
These sessions are conducted to help organisations create a series of set messages for perennial issues or to creat holding statements that can be used quickly, while an issue is being thoroughly assessed.
These sessions can also be used to create and test messages for an upcoming media campaign.
Media Conference 1.5 hours
While a media conference is one way to present messages to many members of the media similtainously, it also heightens the need to be well prepared as any mistakes gain the same exposure.
This session follows News and Q&A and prepares the newsmaker for the unique pressures and strategies required to make a news conference successful.
Rehearsal 1-2 hours
Seasoned media performers always 'warm-up' prior to a major media encounter.
Our Rehersal sessions put prepared messages to the test prior to them being exposed to the media. This allows for some refinement, if necessary. At the same time, these sessions help the newsmaker become more familar and comfortable with delivering those messages.
On Camera Presentation by arrangement
This is a course designed for people who may need to do 'to camera' reports as either an indusrty spokesperson, (eg finacial sector) internal communications (video newsletter or teleconference presentations), commercials or live sattelite TV appearances. Use of an autocue can also be covered in this session.
Strategic Planning by arrangement
We assist to organise media campaigns, create and 'test drive' effective messages and offer advice from 'a media perspective'.
Media Assist can contribute to creating media protocols and help in the selection of a spokesperson or a small team of spokespeople by providing true to life media encounters and then assessing individual strengths and weaknesses.
