The house is conveniently located for lazy days by the sea, walking, cycling, riding, golfing, fishing or discovering the ancient town of Dol-De-Bretagne with its bustling street market, shops, restaurants, supermarkets, swimming/sports complex. The towns of Le Mont St. Michel, St. Malo, Dinard and Dinan are a short car ride away and Cancale, well known for its fantastic oysters bought fresh from the quay, is a must. There is plenty to attract young and old alike from Sand Yachting, Parc Cobac, Port Miniature, Go Karting to the many beautiful chateaux and gardens in the area. The temperate microclimate of Brittany, warmed by the Gulf Stream, is ideal for days out to discover the rugged seascape, sandy beaches, quiet coves and the cobble-paved medieval walled towns, rich in history and charm. There are many wonderful examples of prehistoric megaliths and vestiges of Neolithic civilization to be seen - legends and myths are plentiful.Distinctly different to other French regions, as it was only unionised with France in 1532, there is a certain Celtic fascination and mystique that is still apparent today.

St Malo
Once a fortified island, this impressive walled city is not only a major port and ferry terminal but also a popular holiday resort. It was all but obliterated during the last war but has now been restored to its former splendour. There is a maze of narrow, winding streets within the walls offering a huge choice of restaurants and lively nightlife.

There are over 3 million visitors per annum to this beautiful Benedictine abbey and it is well worth going to see. To stand a chance of soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying your trip we recommend you visit either earlier in the morning, late afternoon or attend the Son et lumière (sound and light show) at the Abbey which is each night from 7pm (except Sundays) from July to September.

Dol-de-Bretagne

Dol is a beautiful small town; the main street - Rue Des Stuarts runs through the centre and hosts a lively market each Saturday. There are many restaurants and cafes serving a wide variety of food to suit all budgets. Both sides of the unevenly cobblestoned Grande Rue des Stuarts (Stuart Avenue) are lined with pretty half timbered and pillared houses and the area is full of impressive medieval residences, such as the Logis de la Croix Verte, the Maison de la Guillotière and the Porche à Pain. The oldest houses date from the 12th century and Saint-Sampson cathedral has a three tiered nave and dates from over 800 years ago. At the edge of the town is Le Mont Dol, which was formerly an island. Now surrounded by a swamp, it is topped by the Tout Notre Dame. Pilgrims climb a snaking road to make it to the top, while climbers go up the hard way-the south and east faces are ideal piton terrain. Not far away, Landal Castle is beautifully restored and maintained, and eagles are reared there. If the weather is good, you can watch a display of the flight of these magnificent creatures.

As the wealthy capital of the region, this attractive city is not lacking in vitality. The 'old town', with the most beautiful timber frame houses in France, lies to the north and the more modern quarter has been established to the south. There are so many restaurants, creperies and bars to choose from - you will definitely be spoilt for choice. If fish and seafood is your preference, look no further. There is a profusion of lobsters, scallops, crabs, prawns, mussels and especially oysters that are superb, even by French standards. The wafer thin crepes are just as famous and even more delicious when accompanied by the local cider or a bottle or two of the dry white wine, in which the area excels.
