About Us
Réjouissance was founded in 1995 by Halifax musicians Karen Langille and Ivor Rothwell, both long time members of Symphony Nova Scotia. This ensemble specializes in the performance of 17th and 18th century music on both period and modern instruments, in historically informed style. The name ‘Réjouissance’ means rejoicing or merrymaking, and the ensemble strives to enliven their performances with these sensibilities. Réjouissance draws most of its repertoire from the vast collections of European instrumental music – from early 17th century Italian composers such as Uccellini and Fontana, to great 18th century German masters like Bach, Handel and Telemann. Musical offerings include trio sonatas, solo sonatas, early instrumental dances and early song settings…..occasionally enhanced with the addition of a crumhorn!Réjouissance has been heard on CBC Radio 2, both locally and nationally, and has appeared in many historical venues throughout Nova Scotia, including Province House. In addition to offering their own concert series at Bethany United Church in Halifax, Réjou has appeared on most concert series in the area, including Musique Royale, Musique Saint-Bernard, The Music Room Chamber Series, The Mount Allison University Chamber Music Series, Dalhousie Chamber Music Series, and the Mahone Bay Summer Concert Series. In addition to solo performances, the group has also enjoyed collaborations with choral groups, including the Halifax Camerata Singers and the Bedford Singers.Réjouissance has had the privilege of performing at a number of important cultural events in Nova Scotia, including ‘Susanna Comes Home’ celebrating the return to Mount Uniacke of the portrait of Susanna Francklin c. 1762 by J.S. Copley at Uniacke Estate Museum Park, NS, and the unveiling of the sculpture ‘Deportation’ at Grand Pre National Historic Site of Canada, NS. In the summer of 2004, Réjouissance was the featured artist in residence at the province's first ever Early Music Symposium in Annapolis Royal, NS.In December of 2009, Réjou hosted their first annual "Christmas With Rejou", to celebrate the release of their debut CD, An Olde World Christmas. The sold out event, cabaret style, featured an evening of original arrangements of religious and secular carols spanning more than five centuries, along with traditional apple cider and gingerbread made from 18th century recipes. A highlight of the evening was the debut of Ivor's baroque wave machine, which no rendition of "I Saw Three Ships" should be without!Symphony Nova Scotia featured Réjouissance in the opening concert of their 2010-11 Baroque Series.
