Safety first.
What is "Top-Rope" climbing?
Red Cedar Outdoors uses the safest modern climbing techniques and equipment.
There are many different types of rock climbing, but when you come to us as a beginner
or someone with limited experience, you will be engaging in the safest type
known as "top-roping".
In a top-rope set up, the rope is always supporting the climber from above. As the climber
moves up the rock, the rope moves up with them and, at any point, if they fall or decide to
rest the rope is right there to catch and hold them.
At the top of the climb the rope runs through 2 metal D-rings known as "locking
carabiners". The carabiners are attached to a redundant series of anchors,
usually large trees or specialized gear placed in the rock, which are able to hold
weight far in excess of the person climbing. The other end of the
rope runs back down to the ground where an
experienced instructor controls the rope with a
breaking device on his or her harness.
This is known as "belaying".
