about ashland's ferrets.
This website is dedicated to my five ferrets- Sebastian, Clifford, Oracle, Thao, and Newguy. They are quite possibly some of the most incredible animals I've ever owned.
In May 2007, I (literally) woke up and said "I think I'll get a ferret while I'm in Arizona this summer." And that is exactly what I did. And on June 23, 2007, I arrived in San Diego, kennel in hand, and introduced Theodore and Sebastian to their new home. After one month undercover, I was finally busted by my Dad. Eventually they grew on him, too, and that is why they, along with their extended family, are here today.
Ferret Legalization in California.
Ferrets are still illegal to own as pets in the state of California, even though there is a very large number of residents who house them. Though I'm not sure of the extent of "ferret owners are constantly looking over their shoulders", the California Department of Fish and Game, as well as Animal Control, are always a threat.
know your rights.
Please visit www.legalizeferrets.org and sign up to receive CliffNotes for more information on ferret legalization efforts in California.
If your ferret is seized in California, don't let the confiscating agency lead you think there are no options.
California Department of Fish and Game Code 2189 gives the ferret owner the right to pay transportation costs to send the ferret to the permanent adoptive home of their choosing. If Animal Control is the confiscating agency, please remember to make them aware of this and get in touch with a DFG enforcement office. They may be willing to make the call to AC letting them know this is allowed.
They will also be able to give you infornation on how to handle the situation.
In my recent experience, the DFG asks for a bonded carrier to deliver the ferret over the California state line. The only company I know of that is able to do this is Global Animal Transport.

Sebastian.
Mr. Sebastian P. Polecat was born April 7, 2007. He traveled from Tucson, Arizona to San Diego, CA in June 2007. Sebastian has always been the big baby. He's incredibly spoiled, but very sweet. There is something about him that simply makes everyone fall in love with him. He has a slightly unusual ferret personality, especially since he doesn't steal much. In August 2008, Sebastian was diagnosed with gastric ulcers. He routinely took medication to coat his stomach, as he was rapidly losing weight. At a recent re-check with his doctor, they found an intestinal blockage. On July 13, 2009, he underwent surgery to remove a large piece of rubber. He is making a quick and full recovery.
Mr.Clifford.
Mr. Clifford Polecat joined the Polecat family on September 9, 2008. His age and birthday are a mystery, though he is estimated to be close to 2 years old. Mr. Clifford was found in Chula Vista, CA by a California ferret legalization group called Legalize Ferrets when he wandered away from home and ended up in the mouths of two very large dogs. His condition went from bad, then to not thinking he would make it, and finally to possibly not being able to walk. At first, he was not accepted by Theodore. Within a few months, he was not only "in" and no longer being picked on, but he was also regaining strength in his back leg. Clifford now walks, jumps, climbs, loves to give kisses, and is so full of life!
oracle.
Miss Oracle Polecat, also know as "squeezel weezel", was born in October 2007. She was flown into Phoenix, Arizona from Panama City Beach, Florida in January 2008. Oracle was born with a genetic defect which resulted in one of her eyes being about half the normal size. Though this causes a slight loss of vision, it doesn't seem to have much effect on her. She really is a wonderful little girl.
Theodore.
Mr. Theodore "Thao" P. Polecat was born April 7, 2007 and traveled from Tucson, Arizona to San Diego, California in June 2007. His only sibling is Sebastian. Theodore, Thao for short, definitely would consider himself the alpha male. His greatest enjoyment is simply anything destructive. Whether he is digging up a house plant, fighting for your cup, no matter what's in it, or biting your toes while you sleep, you can't help but love him. He's always so full of energy, always ready to play, and is quite possibly the greatest thief of his time.
the newguy.
Mr. Newguy Polecat joined the Polecat family in March 2009. He, like Clifford, was lost, so his birthday and where he came from is a mystery. He is definitely less than 2 years old. Unlike his best ferret forever, Mr. Clifford, the Newguy was not only found unharmed, but he wasn't tormented by his new siblings. Newguy has unusually large feet, and he seems to "hop" more than "walk", so he constantly looks over excited- even when he's headed to the potty. At first he seemed a little overwhelmed by his new siblings, but quickly learned the ropes, and now he's as happy as can be.
