NATIONAL HISTORY
From seven young educators, Sigma Gamma Rho has become an international service organization comprised of women from every profession. Sigma Gamma Rho offers its members opportunities to develop their unique talents through leadership training and involvement in sorority activities. Sorority activities provide an atmosphere where friendships and professional contacts are developed which often lead to bonds that last a lifetime.
Sigma Gamma Rho's commitment to service is expressed in its slogan, "Greater Service, Greater Progress." The sorority has a proud history of offering service wherever chapters exist, including OPERATION BigBookBag, a program designed to address the needs, challenges and issues that face school-aged children who are educationally at-risk in local homeless shelters and extended care hospitals. The objective is for chapters to provide their local homeless shelters and children hospitals with educational materials, equipment and supplies. Other national projects include Wee Savers, Project Reassurance and Habitat for Humanity, Sigma Gamma Rho built seven homes across the United States in Florida, District of Columbia, Wisconsin, California, and Texas.
The service of Sigma Gamma Rho from a global perspective includes Project Africa and Project Mwanamugimu. Through active participation in programs and through networking with other organizations such as the National Council of Negro Women, Urban League and the NAACP, Sigma's legacy of service to improve the quality of life for all mankind continues.
Currently Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and RE/MAX Supreme Properties, Inc. hold partnership to provide educational scholarships while promoting homeownership.

CHAPTER HISTORY
Zeta Mu Sigma Chapter was chartered on Saturday, November 5, 1983 by Dr. Mynora J. Bryant, 13th Northeast Region Syntaktes. The ceremony was held in the Commonwealth Room of Newcomb Hall at the University of Virginia. Chartered as the Charlottesville – Piedmont Alumnae Chapter, the charter officers were: Soror LorettaSalter, Basileus; Debra Barksdale, Anti-Basileus; Frauline Johnson, Grammateus; Catherine Jolley, Tamiochus and LaBonnie C. Allen, Epistoleus.
Sorors from Richmond, VA and Washington, DC witnessed this joyous occasion and celebrated with charter members at the beautiful reception that followed the ceremony. November 5th began the journey of Zeta Mu Sigma Chapter in providing stellar service to the Charlottesville-Piedmont communities.
After several brief inactive periods, Sorors realized the importance of having Zeta Mu Sigma chapter in the Charlottesville community and began the process of reactivating. In the months of August and September, Sorors Clarybel Peguero, Racquel Dozier, Nicole Gray & Sheronica Barcliff began to meet to plan and execute the return of Zeta Mu Sigma to the Charlottesville, VA community. After careful planning and making a strong commitment, six Sorors reactivated Zeta Mu Sigma Chapter with the assistance and support of Valerie Tyler and Clarybel Peguero on December 1, 2008. The reactivationmembers were: Sheronica Barcliff, Racquel Dozier, Nicole Gray, Alicia Hines, Kristin Jackson and Karla Smith.
Since then, many Sorors have moved out of state to further their careers and follow their dreams. Rhoer Club
A love for youth and the development of their full potential was the primary motivating factor that inspired Founder Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little to organize Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Young people today face challenges that could never have been imagined years ago, but such challenges provide the sorority with opportunites to carry on the vision of Little.
Rhoers are young girls12-18 organized on a local, regional and national level. The Rhoer affiliates are working to help other young people while they learn about their heritage and develop leadership skills. Sigma Gamma Rho is dedicated to helping Rhoers to grow to be women of substance dedicated to service.

SIGMA GAMMA RHO AFFILIATES
Philo Club
Since its inception, Sigma Gamma Rho has promoted unity among women and for years many alumnae chapters worked with individuals who were not members of Greek-lettered organizations. These women were organized into auxiliaries that had various names until 1954 when the sorority officially approved the organized affiliate group and accepted the name of "Philo"(meaning Friend)as their official name.
In 1980 the Philos were organized on a national level and have grown to represent hundreds of women organized on a regional level as well. The Philos have contributed countless hours of community service and thousands of dollars to aid Sigma Gamma Rho's aim to enhance the quality of life within every community.
