Jeff Smith
about
Jeffrey Melick Smith was born in Longbranch NJ during the fall of 1974. Raised in Monmouth County and first introduced to photography by his grandmother at the age of 5, taking pictures remained only a creative outlet for the majority of his life. Photography as a source of income didnt begin to emerge until finishing his field studies in Nepal with the University of Wisconsin 2001. Majoring in anthropology, declaring a visual enthnography minor, and working with veteran photographers while spending a year living and traveling through the Himalayas; Jeff had begun to refine his natural talents. Returning to life on the jersey shore in August of 2001 and no longer bombarded by the colors, sounds, and smells of Asia Jeff finally settled down into a part time profession of shooting product for catalogs in a home studio and began documenting NJs growing surf scene in his spare time. No longer having time for long term documentary projects, Jeff has been publishing in editorial surf and travel magazines and showing his work in intimate local galleries for over 8 years. The themes chosen tend to bring awareness to cultural, social, or environmental causes. Such topics titled Tibetan Culture and the Cause for a Free Tibet, The Changing Urban Landscape or the Hermit Crab, and The Peril of Pollenating Insects have been presented as solo exhibitions. A well rounded professional back ground, an easy going personality, fine attention to detail, and integrity around deadlines have allowed him and his family qualityof life and plenty of time to enjoy it. Blessings!
