MEETING TIMES
As of right now, the Appalachian Events Committee will me meeting every Monday at 5:00 in Buchannan Rm 207 for the 2009-2010 school year.
The AEC will not be meeting the first week of classes. The first meeting will be Monday September 7th.
We Want You!
Everyone should be actively engaged in recruitment for the Appalachian Events Committee. Ask friends, roommates, relatives, neighbors, and classmates. AEC is a great way to join a collegiate family and have a home away from home. Some other opportunities to keep in mind as far a recruitment is concerned would be the upcoming Club Fair and other clubs/organizations you might be a part of.
CLUB FAIR
Club Fair will take place on Friday, September 4th on Heth Lawn. This is a great opportunity to recruit new members.
FOLK ARTS FESTIVAL
Although it is not until October 3rd, the annual Folk Arts Festival is rapidly approaching and will be here before you know it. Reminders have been sent out and we have positively heard back from all of our past vendors. Contracts will need to be mailed out in addition to the never-ending list of emails and chores.

ABOUT US
MEMBERSHIP
Welcome to the AEC
The Appalachian Events Committee (AEC) is made up of Radford University students, facutly, and staff members who are interested in the Appalachian Region, its history, culture, and preservation. Radford University is located in an area rich with heritage, customs, and folklore of Appalachia and its people. The AEC welcomes all those who are familiar with the area as well as those who want to learn more about the region in which they are now living.
The purposes of this organization are to develope an awareness and appreciation for the Appalachian cultures that surround Radford University. In this way, we help represent the one third of RU students whose homes are in the mountains. We believe it is essential that we help represent this small population while at the same time showing the other two-thirds of the student body, who decide to attend school in the mountains, what the mountains have to offer culturally that cannot be found elsewhere.
The Appalachian Evens Commitee sponsors events featuring the music, dance, storytelling, writing, etc. of the region to promote the organizations core beliefs. These events are open to the Radford University community as well as te general public.
Feel free to explore our site and please contact us regarding any questions or comments you might have. A member of the AEC will respond as soon as possible.
EVENTS
As a programming organization at Radford University, we are reasponsible for bringing culture, entertainment, and awareness to our communtiy. We meet our objective by organizing a Folk Arts Festival at the beginning of the Fall semester, Appalachian Awareness Day at the beginning of the Spring semester, a big name concert towards the end of the semester, and an awards banquet to end the year off right.
The Folk Arts Festival is held in the Fall of each year in conjunction with the Highlander Festival as part of the Family Weekend festivities. We bring in expert artisans and musicians from the surrounding area to demonstrate their unique skills surrounding Appalachian crafts and music.
APPALACHIAN AWARENESS DAY
In the winter, at the beginning of Spring semester, the AEC provides a diverse range of exhibits, performances, and guest speakers to highlight important issues in the Appalachian region.
SPRING CONCERT
We search far and wide in search of popular and talented musicians who play the "songs of the mountains" for your enjoyment, and the enjoyment of Southwest Virginia. Past performers have included Doc Watson, Nickel Creek, and Old Crow Medicine Show.
AWARDS BANQUET
At the end of each year, the Appalachian Events Committee holds an awards banquet to highlight the contributions of various members and advocates of the AEC family.
