Francesco Cincinnato (1585-1635) was active in Italy and Spain but very little is known of his life. His most important achievement was probably the commission by King Philip II to replace The Martyrdom of St Maurice, originally painted by El Greco at the Escorial.
The picture depicts the episode of Jesus and the disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:50, Luke 22:54-62); the garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem the night before Jesus’ crucifixion. Jesus fell down on the ground and prayed. The disciples could not stay awake and they slept on the ground.
