Feb Updates
Hi and a very warm welcome to this month’s updates. Before we begin we need to thank John Rushford again, for letting us know that two of our unknown mixes (The Beat Goes On & the Cameo Mix), were done by Les Mixdoctor Adams, cheers John.
While we are on this please note, we won’t be posting anything from the DMC / Mastermix camps. If you do find any of the unknown mixes have been released by them, please let us know and we will remove them.
I must also say a big thank you to Dave Shirt, who has been playing / will be playing mixes from Kev Sweeney, John Rushford , Chris Fletcher, Steve King, Jepi, Perry PHD Daniels, Peter Romer, Walter Speemann, DJ Phatbloke and myself. Which I believe are going down very well. You can catch his show every Friday night 8 till 12pm GMT, at the follow address:

Now to the updates, a little late I’ll admit, but I think you’ll find well worth the wait.
Jepi has been digging deep in his vaults, and come up with 5 mixes from his days gone by, which are the, Rewind 1998 Mix, Rewind Sept 1999 Mix Vol 1, Rewind Sept 1999 Mix Vol 2, Jepi – Memory Lane Mix and his Ten Minutes Of Flavour Mix.
We also have some superb new work in the Studio, which includes Les Mixdoctor Adams – Kool & The Gang Throwdown Mix, Kev Sweeney’s – Grooves 4 Mix and 80s Funk Mix, John Rushford – 80s Club Warm Up Mix, Adam De Vee – Soul FM Mix, DJ Bacon – Universal B Boy Mix and finally a Unknown – Loose Ends Mix
All this along with our Top Ten update, staying with the top ten, I’m playing around with an idea of putting this into a podcast show format that would be available on download. Would this interest you, and is it something you like to see. If so please feel free to feedback via our comments page or simply email us.
Welcome to Pure Soulful Sounds, where the Soul is in the Mix.
Pure Soulful Sounds consists of Ged Morris, Steve King & Jepi ,three guys, whose passion for music is nothing short of limitless. Here you'll find a number of mixes from their past, present and future.
We also offer you for the first time a dedicated tribute page to Duncan Smith, by far their biggest influence.
For those of you that don't know of Duncan, you're in for a treat. Duncan was one half of the Dream Team (along with Steve Quirk of Fusion Flavours) at Sunset Radio, in Manchester.
Duncans work is over twenty years old, and it's as fresh today as it was then. If you listen to nothing else on here, please check Duncan's mixes. If you love Soul, your going to love these.
Will this site change the face of music, well the answer to that is quite simply, a flat no! It's just three guys, who don't take them selves too seriously, playing with what technology has to offer. Sharing the music they love of days gone by via their mixes.
Or as they put it, "on the cutting edge of d***ing about".
Enjoy!
Steve King started in radio with his Nyte Flyte show for IBC Manchester (The Illegal Broadcasting Company). The show ran from 1987 till 1990, and concentrated on Steves first and last love in music, soul.
In 1991 Steve started a new show for IBC called, Wer'e Only Here For The Beer, which he co-presented with Quantice (Liam Fitton). Two guys, who's passion for great music was matched with banter that had the audience eating out of their hands. The show fast gained itself a cult following in and around the Manchester area, for its wacky style of presenting, along with playing classic cuts from electro, hip hop, soul and funk.
This brought Steve to the attention of Duncan Smith, who at the time had his own show with Steve Quirk (The Dream Team) along with being the program controller at Sunset Radio.
In 1993, Duncan offered Steve a Sunday morning slot at Sunset. The shows focus was on the best of days producers / songwriter in black music.
Today Steve has a show on Funkysential Radio at www.funkysentialradio.co.uk which combines the best in old / new skool, soul, R&B and funk, along with interviews , and lets not forget the mixes, which you'll find here.....enjoy.

Geds passion for the whole mixing culture was ignited back in December 1982 / 83, after hearing Greg Wilsons end of year mixes, which aired on Mike Shafts Piccadilly Radio Show "T.C.O.B" (Taking Care Of Business).
When asked Geds says, "listening to those mixes now (which I often do), they dont sound that impressive, in fact I'm sure most of todays youth would wonder what all the fuss was about, but at the time it was to lead the way, for many to follow. If you are in the know, then youll know that Greg Wilson is a Legend, if not, then its time you did your homework".
Soon after hearing Gregs work Ged was lucky enough to bump into Chad Jackson, who was starting to make his own waves in mixing history.
At the time (1983) Chad was the resident DJ at the Dance Factory in Bolton, and it was here, after many pints or larger and pestering, that he was to teach Ged the fundamentals of mixing.
Soon after Chad moved on to the Hacienda, along with taking over from Greg on the end of year mixes for Mike Shaft, doing the Best of 1984 and Best Of 85.
In 1987 Chad won the DMC World Mixing Championships, and in 1990 he released Hear the Drummer (Get Wicked) which went to number 3 in the UK charts.
At the beginning of 1984 Ged purchased a set of SL1210s, and set about learning how to use them. Looking back, Ged says "it's hard to believe now, but I was one of the few people that owned a set of Techniques, in the Bolton area. In fact once the word got out, most Sunday afternoons, you would find most of the Bolton Youth crammed into my bedroom, trying to out do each other on the Wheels of Steel, much to the annoyance of the neighbours".
In 1986, and for the record, Mike Shaft did his own end of year mix, there after he handed it to Duncan Smith who did the Best of 87, Best of 88 and the Best of the Decade (89).
In 1989 Ged met and became friends with Duncan who was working for Sunset Radio. Duncan furthered his education in mixing, by teaching him how to use a Sampler (remember the good old days of the Akai S900, thirty second sample and be happy with it), sequencer, along with how to edit on the trusted Reel too Reel.
During 1991, Duncan asked Ged to put together a few mixes for his show Midnight Mix, Which lead to doing end of year mixes (1991 & 1992) for The Dream Team Show, which Duncan co presented with Steve Quirk on Sunset.
To sum up Ged says "Did I become a super star DJ? Far from it, I was just a young lad, who was lucky enough to meet and learn from my heros".
Here you'll find, as Ged puts it his humble offerings. He says "Ill grant you, not great in today or even yesterdays terms (the talent out there is, and always has been unbelievable). But, if these mixes give the people, more than five minutes of joy, then Ill be a very, very happy man, and the joy is what its about", enjoy.
Jepi started djing and mixing in 1982, making pause mixes on his hifi for a number of breakdancing crews of the time.
His first experience on radio started in 1991 on Sunset Radio, working mixes for a number of dj's, Jepi at the time didn't have samplers, sequencers etc to create his mixes, he just used a four track real to real and two Technics decks, and still manage to create some classic mixes.
Since then Jepi has worked on a number of radio stations including Kiss fm / Galaxy fm / Soul Nation / Buzz fm and North Soul but to name a few. Currently he has been asked to mix for Kiss 100 in london plus hosts his own show on Skratchlab radio.
Along with this Jepii has remixed for a number of record companies and artists such as Nas / Beatnuts / Zhane / Mc Lyte, most of which have been featured on the DMC DJ Remix Service.
You can buy a number of Jepi's mixes on line at

And of course you'll find exclusive material here at Pure Soulful Sounds.
Its only right that we dedicate a tribute page to Duncan Smith, by far our biggest influence from years gone by. In fact it could be said this whole site is a tribute to Duncan, as it was conceived on the back of building a site purely as that, but due to lack of time, by all parties, and material it's never been finished.
Sadly Duncan passed away back in 1999. Anybody that knew Duncan will tell you his passion for music knew no bounds, and all will confirm he was one of the nicest most helpful guys you could ever wish to meet.
He was a complete geek with technology, who could recite an operation manual, to something like an Akai S950, backward in his sleep. He could find new and unique ways of using equipment with in weeks of getting it. In fact, if we tell you that Jimmy Jam, (from Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis fame), after hearing his entry for a DMC remix competition, asked him how he had put it together, then this should tell you how inventive Duncan was. Needless to say he won the comp.
As for music, well he could spot a classic at two hundred yards in a sandstorm. Take a listen to the Best of 88 (the original version), the number of now classic tracks in this mix is mental. We know the likes of Steve Quirk, Mike Shaft and Ray Rose would more than back us up when we say, Duncan was quite simply a legend.
We must point out that the best of 88 original came from a tape, so forgive us if the quality is a bit off. Which is why we have also given you the edited version, which came from a master.
Please take the time to listen to his work and we're sure you will all agree when we say, the quality and the love speaks for it's self.
Duncan, you are sadly missed but not forgotten, may your memory and love live on in your work. See you on the other side la, until then, keep spreading the word upstairs.
