Fortunately, in the advent of the information and communications technology age, human behavior shows a trend towards dematerialization (from print to digital). However, inquiry still naturally arise whether digital information is indeed more eco-friendly than information on paper. Research regarding dematerialization typically explores the newspaper and magazine industry and so far, there has not been CO2 emission research regarding paper use in schools or universities but similar pattern of behavior sure arise in both circumstance.
Difficulty in reaching a consensus regarding the print vs. digital dilemma is due to different patterns of behavior of each individual in reading newspapers/magazines/information. Some peruse these materials in minutes while others do so for hours on end as well as the fact that there are different kinds of paper in the market. However, what most research ignores is the fact that paper come from trees, organisms that absorb CO2. Cutting of these trees reduce the potential of reversing the already horrid effects of climate change, sending us into a spiral of even deeper mess.
CO2 reduction potential statistics come from a report by the Department of Science, Technology and Society of Utrecht University on the Reduction of CO2 Emissions by Reduction of Paper Use for Publication Purposes.
