About Mrs. Polen
I am excited to be your English teacher this year. This will be my eighth year teaching at TCTC and my tenth year in education. I graduated from Hiram College with my education degree and from Walden University with my masters in curriculum; I am also Nationally Board Certified in English.
I am married with two girls and I enjoy camping, running, reading, and hanging out with my kids. I also consider myself a life-long learner because I am always trying to learn and grow.
Rules and Procedures
iPad Pilot Program
Late Work Policy:
Deadlines were made for a reason. This is something you will have to deal with and accept throughout your entire life. Having said this, I also understand there are circumstances which require your turning in your work late. If this does occur because you were absent, you MUST present a yellow admit slip from the office in order to be able to turn in the assignment or make up the work missed. The rule of thumb is this: However many days you were absent is the number of days you have to make up the work.
If you have a late assignment for other reasons, you must provide me with a one-paragraph explanation for not turning in the assignment on time. If this paragraph is not included with the work, the work will NOT be accepted!
TCTC is adopting a new program called the iPad Pilot Program. Basically, each student in my English class will be assigned an iPad to be used IN CLASS ONLY. However, because the students will be using the same iPad each day, he or she will be responsible for the upkeep and care of that iPad. The purpose of this pilot program is to see the advantages of using this type of technology in the classroom. The other goal is to try to become a completely "paperless" classroom. This means that very little will be printed out and handed in. Instead, students will be using Google Docs to write, edit, collaborate and turn in their work online. No more flash drives or saving work to the school's network. In addition, students will learn to use the internet properly and use the many apps available on the iPad to enhance learning.
To help facilitate this program, each student must print out, read, sign and return the iPad Usage Policy. Please open the usage policy below and make sure it is given to me. Students will NOT be able to use their assigned iPad until this has been done. I look forward to learning with your students as we implement this pilot program! Please let me know if you should have any questions regarding this!

*Listen to each other as we are all speaking in class. Believe it or not, many times you learn more with your mouth closed and your ears open.
*Absolutely no sleeping, fighting, bullying, swearing or otherwise being disrespectful to me or anyone else in class. Period. It will NOT be tolerated.
*You must sign out to leave the classroom and you MUST have a planner to do so. If you do not have a planner, you may leave, but you will be written up.
