Intelligent Orthopaedics
About IO
Intelligent Orthopaedics was formed in 2005. We specialise in the design, development, manufacturing and distribution of orthopaedic trauma devices.
We are based in Staffordshire in the UK and have ISO13485 certification, CE marked products and FDA clearance to market.
We have two main products STORM and IOS.
The Staffordshire Orthopaedic Reduction Machine (STORM) was our first product. It is a reusable theatre device for the reduction of fractures of the tibia from distal to proximal articulations.

IOS - Why are there two lengths?
IOS comes in a 70mm and 110mm length. In studies conducted at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire it was found that IOS is suitable for 90% of tibial shaft fractures. The 70mm length suits 50% but enables the fixator to be positioned more proximal or more distal than its 110mm cousin. IF the fracture is too long for the 110mm IOS then this suggests the fracture is not suitable for external fixation
IOS - Epicentric Positioning
Research conducted at the University Hopsital of North Staffordshire and Staffordshire University has identified that in order to minimise shear at the fracture site a monolateral fixator must be positioned symmetric about the centre of the fracture and the centre of bending must also be located at the centre of the bone; this is epicentric placement. The minimal length of the IOS fixator makes this much easier to achieve than with competitor products.
IOS - Low Profile
The IOS fixator has one of the lowest profiles of any external fixator on the market. It has been designed to look sleek but robust. Patients, therefore, are not inhibited from wearing slacks, trousers or jeans. This has been specifically designed for the patient to feel comfortable, and feel confident thus enabling them to mobilise and perform normal daily routines.
